Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, some people believe that one of the major environmental issue of the current period is extinction of a particular species of plant and animals. However, others think there are more concerning problems related to environment that deserve more attention. From my personal perspective, it is important to give attention to serious issues equaly, in order to find the best solutions for them.

It is clear that other living creatures like animals and plants are playing important role in the maintenance and balancd of the life, through different functions they perform, such as photosynthesis, which is a biological process by which plants produce oxygen, which is a fundamental component required by mankind to survive. Animals also have critical role, especially in food production sector, even in conducting many scientific researches, as they are an ideal example for such experiments.Because of these vital roles they have , people often think they should be the main focus of researchers, in order to preserve such presious treasures.

On the other hand, some individuals believe that, although, plant and animals are needed requirements for sustainable life, other issues are as important as them to focus on. For example, pollution, which can be defined as one of the serious issues, that caused by increasing number of cars. This problem if not solved effectively, may lead to further deteriorations, especially health related problems, like pneumonia, lung cancer, asthma,...ect.

In conclusion, it is understandable that plants and animals have major parts in preservation of life sustainability and helping human to survive. However, some people believe that other enviromental problems are also concerning and it is important for scientists to conduct researches about.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a personal position: you explain why species matter and introduce pollution as another serious concern. However, the opinion that issues should receive attention “equally” is not developed into a clear comparison or supported with reasons for how priorities should be set. The discussion of species focuses mainly on their usefulness to humans, while the pollution paragraph names health consequences but does not explain their wider environmental impact or provide a specific example. The conclusion repeats the two sides rather than clearly resolving the discussion. To strengthen the response, explain why one view is more persuasive—or how the problems are connected—and extend each main point with a concrete example and explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “However” and “On the other hand” help signal the change in perspective, and the ideas are generally understandable in sequence. Some links are less effective or mechanical: the first body paragraph moves from photosynthesis to animals’ role in research without clearly connecting these examples to species loss, while the final paragraph largely repeats earlier points. Several sentences are also crowded with added clauses, which makes the progression harder to follow. Use clearer topic sentences and develop one central point at a time; then make the conclusion state your position directly rather than simply restating both views.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “photosynthesis,” “sustainable life,” “pollution,” and “deteriorations.” These choices show an effort to discuss environmental issues beyond basic terms, and the intended meaning is usually clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “maintenance and balance of the life,” “ideal example for such experiments,” and “presious treasures.” Spelling errors, including “equally,” “environmental,” and “research,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations such as “maintain ecological balance,” “used in scientific research,” and “valuable species.” Checking spelling and choosing precise phrases will make your vocabulary more convincing and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “photosynthesis, which is a biological process…” and a conditional construction beginning “if not solved effectively.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries occur across the response. For example, “one of the major environmental issue” needs a plural noun, and “Animals also have critical role” needs an article. The sentence beginning “This problem if not solved effectively” is awkwardly structured, and punctuation is inconsistent, particularly where sentences run together. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and article use, and break long sentences into clearer units while retaining some complex forms.
