IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Most of the people think that the important environmental problem of our time is the loss of special species of plants and animals. Others think that pollution and other factors are more important. I believe that other environment damage like pollution and harmful gases more effect our envirnonment.
Firstly, the loss of plants and animals can have a serious factor for the natural environment. Plants and animals play an important role in human lives and ecosystem. Some plants have a medicinal property that used for cure diseases and some animal used for eating harmful insects. For example, bees used for polination flower and bird control the population of insects.
Secondly, some people believe that other environmental problem such as air pollution, harmful gases and water demage are more important. Air pollution comes from different vehicles and gases comes from factories that can be demaged out atmosphere. For example, air pollution from vehicles and factories can lead to severe diseases,
In my view, all these environmental demage are closely connected, so it is difficult to consider only one of them as the important. However, I believe that air pollution and harmful gases demage entire ecosystem. Government should introduce stricker environment laws, promote renewable energy sources and encourge people to grow plants and reduce waste.
In conclusion, although the loss of plants and animals is a serious environment concern, others problems, particularly air pollution and gases are extremely important. A combined effort from government and individual is necessary to protect the environmet for future generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state your own position: you explain the ecological value of species, then discuss pollution and harmful gases, and conclude that these problems are interconnected while giving pollution greater importance. The examples of bees pollinating flowers and birds controlling insects are relevant, but the discussion of pollution is less developed: the sentence about factory gases damaging the atmosphere does not explain their effects as clearly as the species examples do. Your proposed actions add a useful response, though the argument would be stronger with a specific example or fuller explanation of why pollution is the greater threat. The response is 244 words, six words below the 250-word minimum; the nine words copied from the task prompt are not counted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion and recommendations, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. However, some links feel mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always fully explained. For instance, the examples about bees and birds follow the ecosystem point, but the pollution paragraph moves from sources to damage without clearly connecting the effects to your argument. The phrase “all these environmental damage are closely connected” also refers broadly to earlier points without specifying the connection. Use a wider range of linking methods and make each example’s relevance explicit to improve flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “medicinal property,” “air pollution,” “renewable energy sources,” and “environment laws.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main ideas. However, several inaccurate word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision: “special species” is less natural than “particular species,” “water demage” is unclear, and “harmful gases demage entire ecosystem” does not express the intended meaning accurately. Errors such as “polination,” “stricker,” “encourge,” and “environmet” are noticeable. Aim to use environmental terms in accurate combinations and check spelling carefully; this would make the argument clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some attempts at complex structures, such as “although the loss of plants and animals is a serious environment concern” and “so it is difficult to consider only one of them.” The main message is generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur throughout. For example, “Some plants have a medicinal property that used for cure diseases” is missing a verb structure and uses an incomplete infinitive pattern; “some animal used for eating harmful insects” also lacks correct agreement and a passive verb form. In “Government should introduce…,” the article is missing, while “a combined effort from government and individual is necessary” has number and article problems. Practise accurate clauses, verb forms, and singular/plural agreement.
