IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, many people believe that the major environmental concern is the extinction of specfic types of plants and animals, while others are of the opinion that there are more critical environmental issues that requires complete focus. In my view, I believe handling other environmental problems such as air pollution, water pollution, and waste management are of utmost importance.

On the one hand, the major historical species of plants and animals are dying because of various climatic changes and human interference. Many aquatic and marine life are affected when human throw a large amount of waste in the seas and oceans, which animals consume considering foods. It results in the ultimate death of these creatures. For example, dolphins are sensative to plastic bags and consuming plastics can cause chocking. Similarly, the climatic changes like sudden winds and rain cause damage to many unique plant species. For instance, bees are unable to produce honey because they cannot pollinate on dead plants.

On the other hand, critics are arguing that different types of pollutions are emerging which are causing health issues in humans. Air pollution is increasing day-by-day in urban areas because of increase in the number of vehicles emitting harmful gases. Thus, breathing issues are dominant there. For example, many people are prone to use asthma and breathing equipments as it is extremely difficult to breath in smoke fumes mixed with vehicles gases In addition, water pollution and waste effluents are also impacting human life as they are consumed in greater amounts daily. Therefore, society needs to put their focus on these environmental problems.

In conclusion, although loss of marine animals and plants can be dangerous to some extent, I believe, an increase in air pollution, water pollution, and waste should be considered more important to solve environmental hazards.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: you argue that pollution and waste management deserve greater attention. The two body paragraphs are relevant, and examples such as plastic harming dolphins and vehicle emissions affecting health help support the discussion. This meets the task well overall, while some ideas are less fully explained than others. In particular, the link between climate change, “sudden winds and rain,” and the loss of plant species is asserted rather than clearly demonstrated; the bee-and-honey example also does not directly explain species loss. Develop each point with a more precise cause-and-effect explanation and ensure examples support the specific claim. Your position is clear, but a more balanced comparison of the scale or consequences of the two types of problem would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. Some connections, however, feel mechanical or do not fully clarify the relationship between ideas. For example, “Similarly” introduces a point about plant damage that is not closely parallel to the preceding example of marine animals, and “Therefore” moves quickly from pollution’s effects to the recommendation. The conclusion also repeats the list of issues without synthesising the comparison. Use more precise links between claims and explanations, and make sure each paragraph develops one connected line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “human interference,” “harmful gases,” and “effluents,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific environmental language, though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “major historical species,” “consume considering foods,” and “prone to use asthma and breathing equipments” do not express the intended ideas clearly. Spelling slips such as “specfic,” “sensative,” and “chocking” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and check word forms and spelling; for example, describe species as “endangered” or “native,” and say people “use inhalers” or “require breathing support.” More precise vocabulary would make your explanations clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses beginning with “because,” “when,” and “although,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. For example, “issues that requires” should use a plural verb, while “Many aquatic and marine life are affected” has a mismatch between the uncountable noun and plural verb. In “because of increase in the number,” an article is needed, and the sentence ending “vehicles gases In addition” needs punctuation before the next sentence. There are also awkward constructions such as “bees are unable to produce honey because they cannot pollinate on dead plants.” Review agreement and article use, and proofread punctuation, while continuing to practise complex sentences with clear clause relationships.
