IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals think loss of specific species is the major environmental problem while others believe besides this problem, there are more detrimental environmental problems are existing. This essay will discuss both points but agree with the latter statement because golobal warming is now increasing in an alarming rate due to environmental pollution and also excessive carbon foot-print leads to sea level rising.
Extinction of any species may have a great impact on diversity but some considers that endangered species of plants and animals are the major environmental problem. The loss of particular species of plants is harmful for our environment because some plants contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide from environment by a biological process as a result, when this plants will diminish, there will be large amount of carbon dioxide in air which leads to environmental pollution. Again the ecological system of the environment dependon the on the every species of animals so extinction of any species of animals destroys the system thus leads to unwanted environment problem.
Besides extinction of species, there are many environmetal problems which also cannot be denied such as deforestation and global warming. Due to increasing amount of carbon foot-print , the temperature is increasing at a high rate, leading to rise in sea-level as a result, the coastal areas are in risk to go under water soon. Again, deforestation leads to excessive hot weather consequently infertile land. For example, due to excessive hot climate, the government of bangladesh started a campaign of tree plantation in all district to save environment.
In conclusion, extinction of particular species is a major environmental problem, the detrimental effect of deforestation and excessive carbon release on environment cannot be ignored. I agree with the opinion that global warming is the most alarming problem in the current world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and make your position clear: you accept that species loss matters but argue that global warming is the more alarming problem. Relevant explanations include plants absorbing carbon dioxide and the risks of rising sea levels to coastal areas. The Bangladesh tree-planting example also supports your discussion of deforestation. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the explanation of species loss is somewhat general, and the link between animal extinction and damage to the ecological system needs a clearer example or explanation. Your conclusion repeats your position, though it could compare the relative scale or urgency of the problems more explicitly. Developing these points further would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from species loss to other environmental threats is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Besides” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. At times, however, linking feels mechanical, particularly with repeated “Again” and several cause-and-effect links joined in long sentences. Some references are also unclear, as in “when this plants will diminish,” where the reader must infer the intended meaning. Use a wider range of transitions and make each sentence’s relationship to the previous one explicit; this would make cohesion more flexible and smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “endangered species,” “ecological system,” “deforestation,” and “sea-level.” These terms help communicate the environmental focus, and phrases such as “alarming problem” convey your view. You also attempt more formal expressions, but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “golobal warming,” “carbon foot-print,” “excessive hot weather,” and “in risk to go under water.” Spelling errors such as “environmetal” and “dependon” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, but more precise collocations and careful proofreading would strengthen the vocabulary. Aim to use familiar topic terms accurately rather than forcing less natural phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses with “because,” “as a result,” and “leading to.” This shows some range, and the main message is generally understandable. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction remain noticeable. For example, “some considers” should be “some consider,” “the ecological system … depend” needs subject–verb agreement, and “when this plants will diminish” has problems with both the determiner and verb form. Several sentences also run together, such as the explanation beginning “because some plants contribute,” so punctuation and clause boundaries need attention. Practise checking agreement and building complex sentences with clear, correctly punctuated clauses.
