IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Every species plays a huge role in environment. Some polute, well some nourish the environments.Like for instance bees polute environment whereas predators controls animal population so both contributes in environment in a negative and positive way.Extinction disrupts food chain and threatens food quality.Deforestation, hunting and habitat destruction accelerate biodiversity loss. For example the decline of bees and other polunaters can decline the production of fruits.
Other envitonment problems also plays a vast role in destruction and disruption of environment.Climate change causes heat that can result in more melting glaciers which can later in monsoon leads to flood. They can brought droughts raising sea levels and delayed rains resulting in less crop produce.Air pollution leads to smog that can make the quality of food worse and can cause in spreading life threating deseases also premature deaths.Water pollution poisons rivers which can be harmful for crops and can later be the backbone of desease. These problems can lead huge problems for daily life and people they are more tend to get sick. For example in pakistan severe heatwaves and floods have distrupted daily life and homes of people so much.
In my opinion both factors have there side effects.Extinction of species is irreverseable and can lead to the problems which cant be solve.Whereas other climate changes have broader immediate effect on daliy life of people and nature.Human tends to get sick and environment is getting harm.Seasons are being delayed and winters are getting shorter, like in pakistan winter will arrive for only 20 days in last of the season. These problems are interconnected: climate change and pollution can destroy habitats and accelerate extinction.
Therefore, governments should tackle these wider environmental threats while protecting biodiversity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear opinion: species loss is irreversible, while climate change and pollution have broader immediate effects. The examples of pollinators, food production, and heatwaves and floods in Pakistan are relevant and help explain your points. The final observation that these problems are interconnected also adds a useful perspective. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the discussion of air and water pollution lists possible harms but does not clearly compare their scale or importance with biodiversity loss. The claim about Pakistan’s winter lasting only 20 days would also be stronger with clearer context or support. Develop each comparison with a specific cause-and-effect explanation to make the argument more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it discusses species loss first, then other environmental problems, gives your view, and ends with a recommendation. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “For example,” “In my opinion,” and “Therefore” guide the reader. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the first paragraph, “Some polute, well some nourish” is difficult to follow, and the relationship between the examples and the claim about extinction is not always explicit. Pronouns such as “They” in the climate-change discussion have unclear references, while “these problems” is repeated without always specifying which problems are meant. Use clearer topic sentences and refer directly to the relevant issue when linking ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt relevant environmental vocabulary, including “Extinction,” “food chain,” “biodiversity loss,” “habitat destruction,” “glaciers,” and “sea levels.” These terms show an effort to discuss the topic beyond basic everyday language. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning harder to follow: “polute” appears to mean “pollute,” although bees pollinate; “polunaters” is misspelled; and “backbone of desease” does not express a clear idea. Phrases such as “huge problems” and “vast role in destruction” are also imprecise or unnatural. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; precise wording will make your environmental arguments clearer and more credible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple statements and some longer structures, including cause-and-effect clauses such as “Climate change causes heat that can result in more melting glaciers” and the contrast introduced by “Whereas.” This gives the response some structural variety. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “predators controls” and “both contributes” do not match their plural subjects, while “They can brought droughts” has an incorrect verb form. The opening also joins ideas with punctuation that makes the sentence difficult to parse. These errors sometimes impede understanding, particularly in the climate-change paragraph. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and divide long or loosely connected sentences into clearer clauses.
