IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In this contemporary world, the enviromental issue is becoming a very common topic between the society. Some people argue that the cutting of greenary and loss of particular species are causing more enviromental damage. Whereas, others put forward the point that there are other various devastating issues which are causing the enviroment more prominent damage. In my perspective, I partly agree with both the views. There are several reasons which supports my point of view.
Cutting the trees and pollution from factories eventually results in damaging the sea life and effects many crucial species also. This cause a large impact on the world. For instance, deforestation results in terms of natural disasters and earthquacks. Furthermore, damage which is caused to the life of underwater species causes various difficulties to those who relay on underwater animals for example, Fisherman.
Nevertheless, there are other crucial steps taken by the people and our society which are causing the enviroment more damage. For example, Pollution from the vehicle. In my view, the damage that we are causing our world everyday specially highlights the issue of pollution from our vehicles because those are a assential part of everyday life and people use that everyday.
The smoke coming out from a vehicle is constantly damaging the ozone layer. This issue can cause considerable results for the human nature because if the ozone layer becomes more thin, we will have to face the circumstances which will be from the sun and
it's damaging rays.
Secondly, wastage of water is another big issue which should not be taken as granted because it can result in world war. For instance, if water becomes short the whole world will fight for it which can cause to bigger problems for the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state a position—“I partly agree with both the views”—so the response is relevant to the question. You also introduce several environmental concerns, including species loss, vehicle emissions and water scarcity. However, the discussion of species loss is not consistently distinguished from deforestation and pollution, and the examples are not always convincing: the claim that deforestation causes earthquakes needs explanation or a more accurate example. The points about vehicle pollution and water shortages are relevant but remain broad, with little evidence or development. To strengthen the response, explain how biodiversity loss matters in its own right, compare its significance with other problems, and support each main point with a clear, specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on species and habitat damage, and a paragraph presenting other environmental concerns. Transitions such as “Nevertheless” and “Secondly” help signal changes in direction. However, the progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear. The first body paragraph moves from factory pollution to deforestation, earthquakes and fishermen without fully showing how these points connect. The final paragraph introduces water wastage but ends without linking it back to your overall position. Some references, such as “This issue” and “those,” could be clearer. Organise each paragraph around one central claim, then explain and illustrate it before moving to the next point; a brief conclusion would also make the argument feel more complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “deforestation,” “underwater species,” “ozone layer” and “devastating,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice problems that reduce precision, such as “enviromental,” “greenary,” “effects” where “affects” is intended, and “assential.” Some combinations are unnatural or unclear, including “causing the environment more prominent damage” and “considerable results for the human nature.” Repeated general terms such as “issue,” “damage” and “problem” also limit flexibility. Aim for accurate environmental collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise wording will make your ideas easier to follow without requiring more complicated vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because” and “if,” and most of the main ideas remain understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “There are several reasons which supports” should use a plural verb, while “This cause a large impact” also needs agreement. The opening “Whereas, others…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence, and “those are a essential part” has an article error. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also uneven, particularly in the final paragraph. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and make sure each sentence has a complete main clause. These corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex structures.
