IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's rapidly growing world, there are many things that effect environment. Their are many individuals that say main problem that effect environment is the loss of species of plant and animals ansd some say there are other main problems of environment degradation. This has become a contentious issue. I will discuss both the side in subsequent paragraphs.

To commence with the first point of view, animals and plants play vital role in maintaining the ecosystem.

The loss of animals and plants species will disrupt the foodcycle which give effect on other things also. If the particular animals species wiped out from the foodcyle then the population of other species, which they use to ate will increase, which cause imbalance in ecosystem. The loss of plant from the foodcycle will effect the animals as well as humans who are dependent on them for their food. For example, lion eat the deer and deer depend on green plants, if any one of the thing will wiped out from this cycle that will effect other species life.

On the other hand, many people think that other factors like plastic effect the environment more which is also correct. The plastic is non-renewable thing that can not destroyed naturally. To destroy the plastic many organisations burn that plastic which cause massive pollution which also cause other respiratory problems. Moreover, plastic also effect the plants and animals. Some animals eat the plastic by mistake which cost them their lives and it effects the fertility of soil, if we try to dump any plastic in the ground.

To encapsulate, it can be concluded both are the main reasons for the environment dissruption. The primarily because loss of animals and plants species cause disturbance in foodcyle while increase involvment of plastic components in nature can effect environment for long time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a concluding position: species loss disrupts food chains, while plastic pollution creates wider environmental harm. The examples involving lions, deer and plants, and animals ingesting plastic, are relevant and help explain your points. However, the discussion is unevenly developed. The species-loss paragraph explains a possible chain reaction, but the plastic paragraph focuses mainly on burning and disposal, without comparing its scale or explaining why it may be more important than biodiversity loss. Your conclusion says both are major causes, but your own view could be stated more directly and consistently. Develop each side with a clearer explanation and make the comparison explicit to strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “To commence with” and “On the other hand” make the shift between positions easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, the repeated use of “which” in the food-chain explanation makes the cause-and-effect sequence difficult to track, and “The primarily because” in the conclusion disrupts the connection between ideas. Some references, such as “that” in “that will effect other species life,” are not precise. Use shorter, clearly linked sentences to explain each consequence, and ensure the conclusion follows smoothly from the discussion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “food chain,” “non-renewable,” “pollution,” and “fertility of soil,” which helps communicate the topic. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “contentious issue” and “To encapsulate.” However, word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less precise: “effect” is repeatedly used where “affect” is needed, “foodcycle” is non-standard, and “environment dissruption” is misspelled. Some phrases are awkward or repetitive, including “main problems of environment degradation” and “other things.” Build accuracy with common environmental collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully; this will make your vocabulary more effective and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If the particular animals species wiped out…” and a relative clause beginning “which they use to ate.” This shows an effort to explain causes and consequences, but some sentence patterns are not controlled accurately. Examples include “animals and plants play vital role,” “the population … will increase,” and “which cause imbalance,” where articles, agreement, or verb forms are needed. The conditional sentence is also incomplete in form, and the final sentence, “The primarily because…,” is grammatically unclear. Aim to produce accurate basic sentences first, then add subordinate clauses; check articles, singular/plural agreement, and verb forms when revising.
