IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Environmental degradation has become major concern nowadays. Some people thinks that the extinction of particular plants and species are the main cause of environmental problems while others belive that there are several other factors including climate change and pollution which can cause environmental problems.
On the one hand, the disapperance of some species may have devastating consequences on earth. They help to maintain ecological balance and extinction of species can disrupt the food chain. For example, the declining population of bees and other insects threatens agricultural productivity. Many crops depend on bees and some other kinds of insects for their reproduction process.Futhermore when a species become extinct the genetic resources is permanently lost. Therefore it is important to preserve biodiversity to maintain ecological balance.
On the other hand, there are other several factors which are important for environmental problems. Climate change largely driven by green house gas emissions is responsible for increasing global temperature, melting ice and in rising sea levels. This consequences can affect human settlements, agricultural production and many more.Again, air pollution and water pollution leads to severe health risks for human being. People suffers from various health issues. For example, exessive industrial emissions and fossil fuel may contribute to global warming which in turn accelerates habitat destruction and numerous species to distinct.
In my opinion, although the loss of species and plants are reasons for environmental problems but the other factors like pollution and climate change can not be overlooked. However , plants and species help to maintain biodiversity but the effect of climate chgage and pollution should be the major concern because it can affect the entire planet and lead to several ecological problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear overall preference: the first body paragraph explains how species loss disrupts food chains and threatens crops, while the second discusses climate change and pollution. The examples about bees, rising sea levels and health risks are relevant. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that climate change and pollution should be the major concern because they affect the entire planet would be stronger if you compared their scale or consequences directly with biodiversity loss. The discussion of pollution also shifts to its effect on global warming and habitat destruction without clearly distinguishing these impacts. Develop the comparison and support your final judgement more specifically.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. The progression from species loss to broader environmental threats is easy to follow, and examples generally appear beside the points they support. However, some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” “Furthermore,” and “Again.” A few connections are also unclear: “This consequences” does not clearly refer to the preceding list, and the final paragraph repeats the contrast without adding much development. Use more precise referencing and make the relationship between pollution, climate change and species loss explicit to improve flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “ecological balance,” “food chain,” “genetic resources,” “greenhouse gas emissions” and “agricultural productivity.” These choices help communicate the environmental issues, and some less common terms are attempted. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “disapperance,” “belive,” “exessive” and “distinct” where “become extinct” is intended. Some phrases are also awkward or imprecise, including “other several factors,” “reproduction process” and “severe health risks for human being.” Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for this topic; more precise phrasing would make your argument sound more natural without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “although” and “which,” and most ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, however, particularly with subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals and sentence boundaries. For example, “Some people thinks” should be “Some people think,” “a species become extinct” needs “becomes,” and “People suffers” should be “People suffer.” In “the genetic resources is permanently lost,” the subject and verb do not agree. There are also punctuation problems where sentences run together, such as after “reproduction process” and “sea levels.” Review agreement and article use, and separate sentences with appropriate punctuation. Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen the response.
