IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that extinction of a specific specie of a plant or an animal is the main environmental concern.Whereas, others believe that there are some other more alarming environmental issues. I strongly agree with this statement that other environmemntal issues such as air pollution, climate change, deforestation and rise in temperature are more important problems these days.

We should take care of wild lives as every specie plays a significant role to balance the food chain. For example, honey bees play an important role in the production of honey as well as participate in natural transportation of pollen grains from one place to another. If honey bees extinct, we will loss both honey and natural transportation of pollen grains. Each specie play crucial role in biodiversity management.

In contrast, other environmental concerns are more important to focus on such as air pollution, our earth is facing this issue each day as emmission of smoke from industries and vehicals, contribute to air pollution that effect respiratory tract of individuals and cause various health problems like asthma.Additionally, emmission of carbon from vehical also deplete the Ozone layer which can lead to various skin problems. Deforestation is also a major issue as authorities clearing the land and cutting the trees for residential and developmental purposes which lead to raise in the temperature and climate change.

In conclusion, I frimly believe that there are major environmental concerns like deforestation, Ozone layer depletion and air pollution as compared to loss of particular species. So government as well as individual should aim to defend our earth from these alarming conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: you recognise the importance of species loss, then argue that pollution, deforestation and climate-related problems are more pressing. The honeybee example gives relevant support to the first view, while the discussion of emissions and tree clearing supports your own view. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For instance, the effects of air pollution are explained, but the claim that vehicle emissions deplete the ozone layer needs clarification or more accurate support. Climate change and rising temperatures are also listed without being explored in detail. To strengthen the response, explain how these wider problems affect ecosystems and people, and make the comparison between species loss and broader environmental threats more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on species loss, a contrasting paragraph on other problems, and a conclusion that restates your position. This makes the line of argument easy to follow. You also use signposts such as “For example,” “In contrast,” and “In conclusion.” At times, however, connections feel mechanical or unclear. The second body paragraph begins with “In contrast” but then combines air pollution, ozone depletion, deforestation and climate change in a long sequence, so the relationship between these points is not always clear. Some sentences also run together without adequate punctuation. Group related ideas more carefully, use separate sentences for distinct causes and effects, and make references such as “this issue” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “food chain,” “air pollution,” “deforestation” and “climate change,” which helps communicate the topic. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “respiratory tract” and “pollen grains.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the expression less natural: “specie” should be “species,” “vehicals” should be “vehicles,” and “emmission” should be “emission.” Some collocations are also awkward, including “natural transportation of pollen grains” and “defend our earth.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “pollination” and “protect the planet.” Proofreading spelling and choosing precise environmental terms would make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If honey bees extinct, we will loss…” and a cause-and-effect sentence about deforestation. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, the conditional needs a verb (“If honey bees become extinct”), and “we will loss” should be “we will lose.” Subject–verb agreement is also inconsistent in “Each specie play” and “emission … contribute.” Several sentence boundaries are missing, as in “food chain. For example” and “one place to another. If,” while the opening “Whereas” creates a fragment after the preceding sentence. Practise complete sentence construction, agreement and verb forms, and check punctuation between clauses. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentence attempts clearer.
