IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

NOWADAYS, PEOPLE ARE DEBATING ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES.HOWEVER, SOME PEOPLE SAYS THE MAIN REASON IS LOSS OF NATURAL HABITAT. WHILST, OTHER SAYS THERE ARE MANY MORE IMPORTANT THAN THIS REASON.

TO COMMENCE WITH, NOWADAYS PEOPLE ARE GETTING SO HARSH WITH ANIMALS , HUMAN BEIGN ARE NOT TAKING CARE OF ANY SPECIES. SOME PEOPLE HIT ANIMALS WHICH IS WRONG AND SOME PEOPLE KEEP ANIMALS AS PET IN THERE HOUSES WHICH IS ALSO WRONG .THE ANIMALS MUST STAY IN OPEN LIKE DOGS SHOULD BE NEAR TO THERE PARENTS , REPTILES ON TREE, AND WILD ANIMAL IN FOREST.FOR INSTANCE, ONE OF MY FRIEND KEPT LIZARD AS HER PET SO THEY WERE OUT OF THERE OWN ZONE ,THAT LIZARD DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA ABOUT WHAT OTHER REPTILES LOOK LIKE .IN CONTRAST , AS I SAY ABOUT PLANT ,THE TREES AND FOREST ARE GETTING CUT OFF AND FOREST ARE BEING REPLACED IN DEVELOPING CITIES, HUGE PLACE IS CONSUMED IN CONSTRUCTING BUILDINGS AND OFFICES. THERE ARE ONLY COMMON PLANTS NEAR HOMES THE NEW GENRATION DO NOT HAVE IDEA ABOUT THERE HERITAGE PLANTS .

TO CONTINUE WITH, AS OTHER SAYS ABOUT DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM, THE VERY FIRST IS CLEANINESS. THE PARENTS MUST TEACH THERE TODDLERS AND CHILDREN NOT TO THROW GARBAGE ON ROAD OR IN OPEN AREA MUST TEACH TO PUT THEM IN DIFFERENT DUSTBINS,IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR NATURAL HABITAT AS WELL AS FOR ENVIRONMENT AND EVEN FOR COUNTRY.FOR EXAMPLE, THE PEOPLE EAT TOBACCO AND SPLIT ON ROAD WHICH IS VERY BAD HABIT AND HARMFUL FOR ENVIRONMENT.

TO CONCLUDE, AS MY OPINION, PEOPLE MUST TAKE CARE ABOUT RESOURCE BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH OF POLLUTION DUE TO COMPANIES, VEHICLES, ELECTRIC APPLICANES AND MANY MORE. EVEN, GOVERNMENT MUST DEVELOP CITIES BY CCTV CAMERAS TO KEEP EYE ON HUMANS THAT THEY ARE NOT HARMING NATURE.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both views by discussing harm to animals and habitat loss, then raising cleanliness, littering and pollution as other environmental concerns. Your conclusion also gives a position: people and governments should protect resources and nature. However, the response only partially fulfils the task because the first view is framed mainly as cruelty to individual animals and habitat destruction, rather than clearly explaining the loss of particular species. The second view is also not developed into a clear comparison of which problems are more important. Examples such as your friend keeping a lizard and people spitting tobacco are relevant but do not fully explain the scale or consequences of these issues. State your position directly and support each view with a focused explanation and example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphs broadly group related points, and signposts such as “TO COMMENCE WITH,” “TO CONTINUE WITH” and “TO CONCLUDE” help show the intended stages. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the first body paragraph moves from animal cruelty to pets, reptiles, deforestation and heritage plants without clearly linking these examples to species loss. Some connectors are used mechanically or inaccurately, including “WHILST” and “IN CONTRAST,” where the relationship between ideas is not clear. Improve cohesion by organising each paragraph around one main claim, then explaining and illustrating it in a logical sequence, with clearer references between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a basic range of topic vocabulary, including “natural habitat,” “species,” “pollution,” “resources” and “deforestation-related” ideas such as forests being cut down. These choices make the general subject understandable. However, vocabulary is limited and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make meaning less clear, for example “getting so harsh with animals,” “there are many more important than this reason,” and “the new generation do not have idea about there heritage plants.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “cleaniness,” “beign” and “appliances” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise environmental vocabulary and check common collocations; for instance, describe species as “threatened with extinction” and forests as “cleared for urban development.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “which” and “because,” and the overall message can usually be understood. However, the range is limited, and attempts at complex sentences are often faulty. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in “some people says,” “other says,” and “that lizard do not have”; articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “as pet” and “wild animal in forest.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are frequently unclear, with long run-on sequences such as the description of animals and their habitats. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles and plural forms, and divide long ideas into complete sentences. Use a few controlled complex structures rather than joining many points together.
