IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Climate change is the reason of many environmental problems. One of them is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Yet some people say that this is the main environmental issue but in my opinion there are more important environmental problems like- sudden natural disasters, atmospheric changes, ozone layers destroy, scarcity of water, pollution.

Due to the climate changes, the environment is changing rapidly. Some particular species of plants and animals cannot adapt these extreme changes and calamities and become extinct. This affect the whole environment as well as the human kind. The loss of particular species of plants and animals will imbalance the food chain and accelerate the indirect extinction of other animals. As example, in Jurrasic age, the extreme wild fire burned almost the whole forest and it caused the food scarcity for the plant based dinosours and they became extinct. Later, this caused the extintion and evolution of other species at that time.

There are way more important enviromental issue. Due to the increasing of green house gas, CFC gas, the ozone layer is destroying rapidly. Ozone layers protects the mankind from the cosmic radiation and UV ray. For ozone layer destruction, mankind have to pay hard price. Another environmental issue is pollution. Pollution direct affect the human health and also affect the animals, food chain. One of worst issue is the scarcity of drinkable water that the world is already facing it. In many countries, drinkable water become unavailable for certain seasons and due to the pollution.

Undoubtly, the loss of particular species of plants and animals is alrming for the environment. But there are more important environmental problems that that for the humankind.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and state your position: species loss is serious, but you consider other environmental problems more important. The paragraphs on extinction and on ozone depletion, pollution, and water scarcity are relevant, and the food-chain explanation gives the first view some support. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The Jurassic example is difficult to verify and does not clearly explain the present-day importance of species loss; the other problems are mostly listed rather than compared or supported with specific examples. Clarify what makes these problems more important—for instance, their scale or direct effects on people—and develop one or two examples. The response contains 28 words copied from the task prompt; these were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, one paragraph on species loss, one on other environmental problems, and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the two views. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes weak, and the second body paragraph moves quickly through several issues without showing how they relate or which is most significant. Linking is also repetitive or awkward: “Yet,” “Due to,” and “Another environmental issue” do much of the work, while “But there are more important environmental problems that that” is unclear. Group related points and use clearer references and transitions to compare them. A more explicit topic sentence for each body paragraph would make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “food chain,” “green house gas,” “ozone layer,” “pollution,” and “scarcity of drinkable water,” so the topic is clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “cosmic radiation” and “extreme changes.” However, word choice, collocation, and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less precise: “the reason of,” “imbalance the food chain,” “pay hard price,” and “alrming” are examples. Some phrases are also imprecise, such as “atmospheric changes” and “natural disasters,” which are listed without explanation. Check spelling carefully and learn environmental collocations as complete phrases. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish causes, consequences, and relative importance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a cause-and-effect sentence beginning “Some particular species … cannot adapt” and a relative clause in “the world is already facing it.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “This affect” should have a singular verb, while “Ozone layers protects” has a plural subject with a singular verb. “Mankind have to pay” also has faulty agreement, and “the world is already facing it” has an unclear grammatical reference. Practise checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and revise long sentences into clear clauses. Greater accuracy in these patterns would make your ideas easier to understand.
