IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
People have different opinion regarding enviromental problems in today's era. Some people argue that loss in species of plants and animals should be considerd into environmental problems, on the other hand other believe that there are many more problems present. I strongly believe that there are significant reasons that affecting the environment in negative ways such as pollution, population and technology.
Main reason why people think that loss in particular species of plants and habitats place a major role and have to consider in environment problems because loss in plants reduces the chance of help in individuals life of taking natural remidies from plants like Neem and Tulsi, which lead to increase the dependence on technology by making use of matchines that required fuel, animals are also an important part of environment as their are lots of animals those eat insects which are the main reasons of harmful diseases but loss in those habitats will increase the dead rate of humans.
However, other problems such as pollution, population and technology play more important role in environmental problems. For instance, due to population rise their are losts of buildinga and roads had construted which create high level of pollution and generate lots of health diseases in humans such as cancer, lungs failure atc.
I strongly advocate that to enhance the environment sturcture we have to work on areas which will help in saving more plants and habitats by saving trees by reducing the use of areas by controlling the population which will help in decline in pollution and increase in animals safety.
In conclusion, although both prospective have their merits, i believe that other problems such as increase in transporation, population is more harmful for environment because it create more problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear opinion: you recognise the importance of species loss, then argue that pollution, population growth and technology create broader environmental problems. The examples of Neem and Tulsi, insect-eating animals, and pollution-related illness make the discussion relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The explanation of species loss is difficult to follow, particularly the link between losing plants, using fuel-consuming machines and greater dependence on technology. The alternative problems are also listed more than explained, and the conclusion introduces transportation without developing it earlier. To strengthen the response, explain each main cause-and-effect link clearly and support your position with one or two more specific examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, a paragraph stating your position, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “on the other hand,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument. At times, though, cohesion is mechanical or unclear. The first body paragraph combines several ideas in one long sentence, making the relationships between plant loss, technology and human health hard to track. References such as “those habitats” and “other problems” are not always precise, and the final position paragraph partly repeats earlier points rather than advancing them. Use shorter, clearly focused sentences and make each paragraph develop one central idea with explicit links between cause and effect.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “species,” “pollution,” “habitats,” “natural remedies” and “dependence,” and you attempt some less common expressions. However, the range is limited in places, and noticeable spelling, word-form and collocation errors sometimes make the meaning less clear. Examples include “enviromental,” “remidies,” “dead rate,” and “environment sturcture.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “loss in particular species” and “enhance the environment structure.” Aim to learn accurate topic collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise terms such as “biodiversity loss,” “ecosystem balance” and “population growth” would help you express the argument more naturally without relying on repeated general words such as “problems.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “which” and “although,” so the response shows some structural variety. However, several complex sentences are not controlled successfully, and errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction sometimes make the reader work to understand the point. For example, “other believe” needs a plural subject and verb, while “loss in particular species … should be considerd” has problems with the verb form and sentence structure. In “due to population rise their are losts of buildinga and roads had construted,” several grammatical relationships are unclear. Practise building accurate sentences around one main clause, then add a subordinate clause; also check subject–verb agreement and verb forms during proofreading.
