IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is a widespread debate on multiple environmental problems. Some individuals argue that the primary environmental problem of the present time is the loss of certain species of plants and animals. While other argued that there are many more issue of environment such as pollution and greenhouse-effect. This essay will discuss both views of the trend before concluding why I believe other issues should also be considered for the major problems.
On the one hand, lost of many particular species of plants and animal is a serious problem of environment, as they play a crucial role in ecosystem. Many different kinds of plants are used for making medicines, which are very essential in medical terms. For instance, many Allopathic and Neuthropathic medicines are formed by some old flora genes. Moreover, animals are the necessary part of food chain So, they are very useful for maintaining balance in the ecosystem.
On the other hand, there are many more distinct environmental problems that are very harmful for the ecosystem, more than the endangered species. The increasing use of carbon can access to greenhouse effect, which cause several health-related problems. Furthermore, excessive use of transport can cause noise and air pollution. For instance, many people face multiple breath-related problems such as asthma because of the polluted air.
In conclusion, although loss of many species of plants and animals can cause imbalance in the ecosystem. However, other environmental problems should also be considered, as they cause a lot of problems related to our health. Therefore, I believe a balance approach should be taken by the government for the solution of these problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and gives a position: it explains why species loss matters, then discusses pollution and greenhouse effects, and concludes that governments should take a balanced approach. The examples about medicinal plants, food chains and asthma are relevant. However, the discussion is unevenly developed. The case for species loss is supported with two brief points, while the alternative problems are named but not explored in much detail; for example, the link between carbon use and health effects is asserted rather than explained. Your opinion also shifts slightly from saying other problems are more important to recommending balance, so make your comparative judgement explicit and maintain it throughout. Developing each main reason with a clearer explanation or specific example would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from species loss to other environmental problems is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, with repeated framing such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore,” and the conclusion’s “although … However” creates an awkward connection between clauses. Some references, including “these problems,” could be more precise. Use a wider range of natural links and ensure each paragraph develops one central point in a clear sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “food chain,” “greenhouse effect,” “air pollution” and “asthma,” so the reader can understand the main environmental issues. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “crucial role” and “maintaining balance.” However, several inaccurate or unnatural choices limit precision: “lost of many particular species,” “many more issue of environment,” and “the increasing use of carbon can access to greenhouse effect.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “Neuthropathic” and “animal” in a plural context are also noticeable. Build a more reliable range of collocations and check spelling; precise phrases will make your arguments sound clearer and more academic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at complex structures, for example, “although loss of many species … can cause imbalance in the ecosystem.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. These include subject–verb agreement in “other argued” and “which cause,” plural and article problems in “many more issue” and “a balance approach,” and an incomplete contrast structure in “although … However.” The sentence beginning “While other argued” is also a fragment when separated from the preceding sentence. Practise forming complete sentences and checking agreement, articles and singular/plural forms. More accurate control of these patterns, alongside varied sentence structures, would make the argument smoother without changing its meaning.
