IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Environmental pollution is one of the most serious discussion of present time. Scientists are giving new theroies with every passing time regarding problems and the causes of our disturbed environment. One popular belief is that extinct of certain groups of plants and animals is the major reason behind this disturbance while some inculde many other causes to environmental issues. From my perspective, there are many more significant reasons behind the disturbance of the environment not just extinction of animal and plant species.
To begin, it is very important to understand why this disturbance is important to discuss. Envrironment means our surroundings in which we breath. Over the period of time, it is observed that environmental changes is a big challenge faced by humans. It is one of the causes why we are dealing with so many health issues. Environmental pollution includes many things including air, water and noise pollution.
Many reasons of this problem are created by humans. Begining with noise pollution, increase number of vehicles are one of the base of noise pollution and along with that not having a civic sense is also promoting this issue. People unnecessarly use car horns most of the time. Similarly vehicles are known cause of airpollution because of smoke released by them. Chloroflurocarbons are the most researched product having bad impact on our air while extending its negative impacts to our ozone layer, which is a protective layer above earth. Plants and animals extinction is also important problem of our environment as certain plants are necessary to maintain good environment but it is not the only cause.
In conclusion, protecting our environment from the problems caused by humans should be prevented by spreading awareness regarding consequences that will occur as a result. It is important to feel responsibility of protecting our environment in whichever way. By eliminating these issues we might save our environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You state a clear overall view: “there are many more significant reasons” than species extinction, and you mention both sides of the debate. The discussion of other environmental problems includes air and noise pollution, vehicle emissions and damage to the ozone layer, so the response remains relevant. However, the two views are not explored in a balanced or sufficiently developed way. The case for species loss is limited to the brief point that some plants help maintain a good environment, without explaining consequences such as disrupted food chains or ecosystem decline. The other problems are listed and described, but their relative importance is not compared with species loss. Develop each view with a specific explanation or example, then make your comparison explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the discussion generally moves from environmental concerns to examples of pollution. Linking expressions such as “To begin,” “Similarly” and “In conclusion” help signal stages in the response. However, progression is sometimes unclear: the second paragraph explains why the topic matters rather than advancing the comparison required by the question, and the final paragraph repeats the general call to protect the environment without drawing together the two views. Some connections are mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Similarly” and “along with that.” Organise the body around the two positions, and use clearer references to show how each example supports your argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “noise pollution,” “air pollution,” “chlorofluorocarbons” and “ozone layer.” These terms allow you to discuss several causes and effects, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, as in “the most serious discussion,” “extinct of certain groups” and “one of the base of noise pollution.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “Envrironment,” “unnecessarly” and “Chloroflurocarbons,” which reduce the precision of the writing. Aim to use familiar terms accurately before adding less common vocabulary, and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise phrases for species loss and environmental damage would also help you express the task’s central ideas.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a contrast in the introduction and a relative clause in “a protective layer above earth.” Most sentences communicate their general meaning, but errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction occur often enough to make some passages awkward. For example, “environmental changes is” should use a plural verb, while “increase number of vehicles” needs an article or plural form. The opening sentence, “Environmental pollution is one of the most serious discussion of present time,” is also difficult to follow because its grammatical structure is incomplete or mismatched. Work on accurate subject–verb agreement and article use, and revise long sentences to ensure each clause is complete. Punctuation and spacing around commas also need attention.
