IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
While some indivduals argue that the primary environmental concern of our times is the extinction of different living species, others believe that there are more concerning problems including air and water pollution. This essay will explore both views before articulating my own perspective that air and other kind of pollutions have a greater impact on environment than any other thing.
To begin with, loss of different species of animals and plants poses a threat to the ecological system. For instance, extinction of lions from the forests would lead to an increase in the number of deers which is going to have a drastic effect on the greenlands, as the deers are particular herbivores and they depend entirely on grass for their survival. Hence, biodiversity plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance and loss of one or more species disrupts the ecological chain which can have cascading effects on the environment.
It is imperative to bring into attention the other serious problems which have a negative influence on the environment in general. For example burning of fossil fuels has increased lately, which results in emission of greenhouse gases leading to climate change worldwide. Beacause of this change across the globe, we are witnessing an intense change in weather conditions. Air pollution resulting from transport vehicles is another major risk to overall health; certain type of allergies and respiratory problems are emerging, posing a threat to lives of people.
In conclusion, while it is important for forest departments to take preventive measure to avoid the extinction of living species to keep the ecological system in balance, there is much greater need, in my opinion. to put the focus on much bigger environmental problems like air pollution which is a havoc to environment as well the overall wellbeing of an individual.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: the introduction says pollution has a greater environmental impact, and the conclusion returns to that position. The discussion of species loss is relevant and supported by the example of lions, deer and vegetation; the pollution paragraph also identifies fossil-fuel emissions, climate change and health effects. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the species example is hypothetical, while the discussion of broader environmental problems focuses mainly on air pollution and gives limited explanation of water pollution or other possible concerns. The claim that pollution has a greater impact would be more convincing with a direct comparison and a specific supporting example. Your response meets the task, but some ideas remain less fully developed or precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall progression: the introduction presents the debate and your position, each body paragraph develops one view, and the conclusion restates your judgement. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “For instance,” “Hence” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument, and paragraphing is appropriate. Some connections are less smooth, however. “It is imperative to bring into attention” is an awkward transition, and “Because of this change across the globe” does not clearly identify which change is meant. The conclusion also moves from the comparison to a recommendation about forest departments without fully linking that point to the main argument. More precise referencing and transitions between cause, effect and comparison would make the progression more consistently fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “biodiversity,” “ecological balance,” “greenhouse gases” and “respiratory problems.” These choices communicate the main ideas and show attempts to use less common environmental terms. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “more concerning problems,” “other kind of pollutions,” “greenlands,” and “a havoc to environment.” There are also spelling errors in “indivduals” and “Beacause.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Aim for natural collocations and accurate forms—for example, “more serious problems,” “other forms of pollution,” and “devastating for the environment”—and proofread spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “which is going to have a drastic effect” and a cause-and-effect construction with “leading to climate change worldwide.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the errors generally do not obstruct the argument. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, particularly with articles, number and agreement: “other kind of pollutions” needs a different singular or plural construction, “certain type of allergies” needs a plural form or an article, and “preventive measure” should agree with the intended meaning. The final sentence also has a punctuation break after “opinion” that interrupts the structure. Review article use, singular/plural agreement and sentence punctuation, while continuing to practise varied complex sentences.
