IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustration gives information about the hydroelectric power station where electricity is produced using water. Overall, the electricity generates only by moving water from higer to lower level while moving through the generators.
It is quite evident from the diagram that the water from river flows to high-level reservior where dam is infront of the water and a small opening called intake is placed. The intake opens during the day and closed in night time. The flow of water during the day is from upper side to the lower for the generation of electricity. Conversly, during the night the flow of water pumping back to the reservior.
Furthermore, at power station there are generators which moves when high pressure water touch them. The water moves from high reservior to low reservior during the day and pumps back to high- level during night .Lastly, the electricity produced by the generators given to the power lines eventully, adds power to the national grid.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main operating cycle and give an overview: water moves from the high-level reservoir to the lower one by day, then is pumped back at night. You also include the intake’s day/night operation and the route from the generator to the national grid, so the key stages are recognisable. This meets the task well, with some features more fully reported than others. The account could be more precise about the reversible turbines: they operate the generator during the day and pump water uphill at night. The claim that water moves through “the generators” is also unclear, since the diagram shows water passing through turbines connected to a generator. Clarifying these details would make the process description more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by details of the reservoir and intake, then the power station and electricity output. Sequencing words such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “Lastly” help signal progression. However, some links feel mechanical, and the relationship between stages is not always expressed clearly. For example, “Conversly, during the night the flow of water pumping back to the reservior” is not a complete sentence, while the final paragraph repeats the day/night movement already mentioned. Grouping the two operating modes into a more clearly connected sequence, and using complete sentences to show how water, turbines and electricity relate, would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “high-level reservoir,” “intake,” “power station,” “power lines,” and “national grid,” which makes the subject clear. There is also some attempt at more specific wording, such as “flow of water” and “generation of electricity.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations reduce accuracy: “higer,” “reservior,” “infront,” “Conversly,” and “eventully,” as well as “high pressure water touch them.” Some terms are also repeated, particularly “water” and “reservoir.” Check spelling carefully and choose precise process verbs and collocations, such as “flows,” “is pumped,” and “drives the turbines,” to make the description more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the overview beginning “Overall” and the contrast between daytime and nighttime operation. The main stages remain understandable, but errors in sentence structure and verb forms are noticeable. For instance, “the electricity generates only by moving water” needs a passive form, and “the flow of water pumping back” lacks a finite verb. There are also agreement and article problems in “generators which moves” and “from river flows.” Punctuation is inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops and a sentence fragment in the nighttime description. Practise accurate passive constructions and complete clauses, while retaining your attempts to connect stages in longer sentences.
