The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram below shows the process of how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station. The hydroelectric power station is a device that generates electricity, and it is connected to a dam which intakes water during the day, and is closed during the night. During the day, electricity is generated using river water held behind the dam in a high-level reservoir, which then flows down into the power station. On the other hand, during the night, water goes through the reversible turbines in the machine and gets stored in a low-level reservoir, and is then pumped back to the dam. Finally, the electricity proceeds to go through a generator which sends it into power lines, and eventually reaches the national grid to be used by people across the country.
