IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The illustration presents the mechanism for the generation of electricity in a hydroelectric power station.

Overall, the procedure starts from making flow of water to the downward side that is coming from a river and ends at supplying electricity to the national grid. In the centre of pwer station, there are reversible turbines that perform dual function, operate generator at day-times, and pump water into high level reservoir at night-times.

The first step in electricity production is the formation of high level of water flow to generate electricty. This is mostly done at day time.To achieve this, river water is stored in a dam at high level and then released to produce water flow. High flow water operate generator with the help of reversible turbines. This will produce electricity that is supplied to nearby National Grid station with the help of power lines.

The second step is maintnance of water at high level reservior, so it can be reused and same above procedure is repeated again. This activity is mainly performed at nigh times, and is done by utilizing the reversible turbines located in the centre of power station that uses some of already generated electricity to pump water into high level reservior region.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully identifies the main features of the hydroelectric power station, including the dual-function nature of the turbines and the cycle between day and night operations. You have clearly described the process flow from the river to the national grid. However, the description could be improved by being more precise with the terminology; for example, referring to the 'high level reservoir' as the 'upper reservoir' and the 'downward side' as the 'lower reservoir' would better reflect the technical nature of the diagram. The overview is clear and effectively summarizes the core mechanism, meeting the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the distinct phases of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'The first step', 'The second step', and 'To achieve this' are used to guide the reader through the sequence. While the paragraphing is appropriate, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the cause-and-effect relationships inherent in the process description.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reversible turbines', 'national grid', and 'reservoir'. However, there are some spelling errors ('pwer', 'electricty', 'maintnance', 'reservior') and minor collocation issues, such as 'making flow of water' instead of 'facilitating water flow'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise technical vocabulary and ensure consistent spelling accuracy. The current range is sufficient to convey the process clearly, but lacks the sophistication and precision expected at the higher end of the scale.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as missing articles ('at day-times', 'at high level') and subject-verb agreement errors ('High flow water operate generator'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances where sentences are slightly clunky due to missing prepositions or awkward phrasing. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater grammatical precision. The errors present do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to limit the score.
