IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The above diagram gives information on how electricity is produced from the hydroelectric power station.
Electricity is produced by using mass amount of water from the river. Firstly, The water is preserved in dam on high-level reservoir, The dam's water is send through a pipe where it goes for generating electricity , During the day time the flow of water is made to operate generator for producing electricity and water is passed by low-level reservoir at day time, after producing electricity it is later on transferred through power lines and to the country. Water consumption is more than in night
Similarly, At the night the dam are closed and the pumping of water is made through the huge pipes and the reversible turbines operates to pump water into high-level reservoir and produces electricity via generator and send it by power-lines and distribute it to the community and country.
Sometime the flow of river do not remain constant in which we face sometimes load-shedding and low power voltage in our homes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response provides a basic overview of the hydroelectric process, but it fails to effectively highlight the key features of the diagram. The description is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, logical structure. While you mention the high-level and low-level reservoirs, the explanation of the cycle (day vs. night) is confusing and contains inaccuracies regarding how the system functions. Furthermore, the final sentence introduces external information ('load-shedding') that is not present in the diagram, which is not appropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, focus on describing the mechanical flow of water and the conversion of energy as depicted in the visual, rather than speculating on external power issues.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'and' to connect clauses. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when describing the movement of water between reservoirs. The transition between the daytime and nighttime processes is abrupt, and the lack of clear signposting makes it difficult for the reader to follow the sequence of events. Improving the use of linking words such as 'subsequently', 'conversely', or 'in contrast' would help create a more logical flow between the different stages of the process.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. You rely on simple terms like 'mass amount of water' and 'send through a pipe'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'water is passed by low-level reservoir' and 'pumping of water is made'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more technical and precise terminology related to engineering or energy production, such as 'intake', 'turbine', 'generator', and 'transmission lines'. The range of vocabulary is currently quite limited, which restricts your ability to describe the process with sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('the dam are closed'), incorrect verb forms ('the dam's water is send'), and punctuation errors, such as unnecessary commas and inconsistent capitalisation. The sentence structure is often repetitive, relying heavily on basic coordination. To improve, focus on mastering the passive voice, which is essential for describing processes, and ensure that your verb tenses are consistent throughout the report. Reducing the frequency of these errors is necessary to achieve a higher score.
