IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The process shows that process of electricity generation in a hydroelectric power station threw several stages.
Overall, storing water flow of river by dam,the used that water flow for generating electricity by passes from power station.the water reusing it by pumping back at night.
To start with at the first stage created a dame for storing the water of river with high level, then it is transfer at night by opening a dam's door. The water passes very fast, it generate electricity in addition that path is also use as pumping back water to the river at night.Water flow enter to the power station and that created power goes to the power lines and extra water at saviour plant which is pump back at night to the river.
In conclusion that process of hydroelectric power station generates electricity by using river's flow and also it is reusable for the next process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the hydroelectric process, including the dam, the power station, and the pumping cycle. However, the description is somewhat superficial and lacks precision in explaining the mechanical stages. For instance, the distinction between the 'high-level reservoir' and the 'low-level reservoir' is not clearly articulated, and the explanation of the pumping process is confusing. While the main features are identified, the lack of clarity in the sequence of events means the information is not fully developed. To reach a higher band, you should focus on describing the flow of water more accurately and ensuring the relationship between the components is clearly explained.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and poor sentence structure. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To start with' and 'In conclusion', but they are often applied mechanically or incorrectly. Referencing is frequently unclear, such as in the phrase 'the used that water flow', which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the sequence of the process. The lack of smooth transitions between sentences makes the text feel disjointed. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows logically from the previous one will significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often inaccurate, which impacts the clarity of the description. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'threw' instead of 'through', 'dame' instead of 'dam', and 'saviour plant' instead of 'reservoir' or 'lower basin'. These errors are frequent and sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. While you attempt to use technical terms related to the process, the misuse of basic vocabulary and spelling mistakes prevent the response from achieving a higher score. You should focus on learning the correct terminology for technical processes and proofreading for basic spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with frequent errors in syntax and punctuation. There are significant issues with verb tense and subject-verb agreement, such as 'the process shows that process of electricity generation... threw several stages' and 'it generate electricity'. Many sentences are fragmented or lack necessary articles and prepositions, which makes the text difficult to read. Complex structures are attempted but are often faulty, leading to confusion. To improve, you need to focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that each sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practicing the correct use of articles and prepositions.
