IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram demonstrates the mode of action of a hydroelectric power station where electricity is generated by the flow of water. This process has been a very effective method of producing electricity for decades.

The bigger picture of diagram shows us that the hydroelectric power station works by two mechanisms . During day time , water moves from area of higher water reservoir where actually electricity is generated where as , night time mechanism is totally opposite to it . At night , water moves from region of lower level water reservoir to higher level reservoir . Basically it is reverse process to the day time process .

First and foremost , water moves to dam directly from river from where it is than moved to generator through a water intake that is closed at night but opened during day time. At generator , the flow of water runs turbine that consequently genrates electricity that is than brought to national grid by power lines . And the water runs to lower level reservior.

Oppositely, the reverse process take place at night during which the water is moved up to the higher level reservior by reversible turbines . These reversible turbines pump water to the higher level resevior , from where the next day process starts again .

Ultimately , it is seen that an equilibrium is developed between the high level water reserviour and low level reserviour.
