IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrate that how electricity is generated in hydroelectric power station by dam storage of water

Firstly, the water came from mountains are stored in dam or reversd barrier connected with dam in the day when water reservoir is hig dam gateways are open and water flows to power station to generate electricity on the other hand in night operation water barriers of dam is closed and pumping is utilised to produced electricity.

In Day flow of water generate power and made electricity to power station respectively in power station generator is installed to process the electricity to power lines and next forward to national grid where the electricity divided to different subdivisions for connections to homes beside on other side in night flow of water is utilised by pumping in night operations and low level of reservoir

Conclusion hydroelectric power station is best way of providing electricity in this era

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the diagram, such as the day and night operations, but the description is often unclear and lacks precision. The explanation of the process is fragmented, making it difficult to follow the sequence of events. While the main stages are mentioned, the lack of clear, logical reporting means the information is not fully developed. The inclusion of a personal opinion in the conclusion is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which should remain objective and descriptive. To improve, focus on clearly describing the movement of water and the conversion of energy in a structured, step-by-step manner without adding subjective commentary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear structure. The paragraphing is insufficient, with the entire body of the report compressed into one dense paragraph. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive and awkward use of 'in day' and 'in night'. The progression of ideas is disjointed, making it hard for the reader to follow the mechanical process of the hydroelectric station. To improve, use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, the day process, and the night process. Use linking words like 'subsequently', 'meanwhile', or 'in contrast' to connect sentences logically rather than relying on simple, repetitive phrasing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often inaccurate, which hinders the clarity of the technical description. Phrases like 'reversd barrier' (likely meant 'reservoir' or 'dam barrier') and 'made electricity' are imprecise. There is significant repetition of basic terms such as 'water', 'dam', and 'electricity'. The student struggles to use appropriate technical terminology related to energy generation. To reach a higher band, focus on learning specific collocations related to processes, such as 'generate electricity', 'harness water power', or 'distribute to the national grid', and avoid using informal or vague language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The diagram illustrate', 'water came from mountains are stored'), missing articles, and incorrect tense usage. Sentence structures are mostly simple or poorly constructed, lacking the variety required for higher bands. Punctuation is also problematic, with a lack of full stops, leading to run-on sentences that make the text difficult to parse. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practice using articles and prepositions correctly.
