The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Overall, the process involves the movement of water between a high-level reservoir and a low-level reservoir. During the day, water flows downhill through turbines to generate electricity, while at night, the water is pumped back to the high-level reservoir for reuse.

During the daytime, the intake is opened, allowing water from the high-level reservoir to flow through a pipe towards the power station. As the water passes through reversible turbines, they operate a generator, which produces electricity. The electricity is then transmitted through power lines to the national grid. At the same time, the used water flows into the low-level reservoir.

At night, the process is reversed. The intake at the dam is closed, and the reversible turbines work as pumps. Water from the low-level reservoir is pumped back through the pipes to the high-level reservoir. This prepares the water for the next daytime cycle, when it can once again flow down and generate electricity.
