IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The process diagram illustrates, the procedure how electricity is produced in a hydrolic power station.
Overall, it clearly shows that there are several stages for the electricity generation in a hydrolic power station. It start with the water of entered toward dam and ends with low-level reservoir.
At the intial stage the water of a river flows towards high-level reservoir and ther water of the river goes towards intake to enter dam which opens at day time and remained close at night, after that the flow of water generates electricity at daytime and moves to power station.
After that after entrening at power station in that there is generator and near that there is power lines which continues towards national grid at the bottom of the generator and the water reach to low-level reservoir at day, there is reversible turbines which operates generator at morning and pump the water into high level reservoir in night time and after that the water goes to high level reservoirs in the night.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to describe the main features of the hydroelectric power station process diagram, meeting the minimum word count. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and a confusing description of the continuous day and night cycle. For example, the student writes that the water goes 'to enter dam which opens at day time and remained close at night', whereas the diagram clearly shows the intake opening and closing, not the dam itself. The overview paragraph is overly simplistic ('It start with the water of entered toward dam and ends with low-level reservoir'). While the general direction of the process is captured, key mechanisms such as the reversible turbines operating differently during the day and night are muddled. Because of these inaccuracies and underdeveloped descriptions, the response corresponds to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is divided into four very short paragraphs, attempting an introduction, overview, and body sections. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by run-on sentences and poor referencing. For example, the sentence 'After that after entrening at power station in that there is generator...' is extremely tangled and difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are either repetitive ('After that', 'and then') or used inaccurately, making the flow mechanical and confusing. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs breaks down due to lack of punctuation and awkward linking phrases. This performance sits firmly at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary with frequent errors in word choice and spelling. Examples include 'hydrolic' instead of 'hydraulic', 'intial' instead of 'initial', and 'entrening' instead of 'entering'. Vocabulary related to the process is repetitive, relying heavily on basic words like 'water', 'river', and 'day time'. Attempts to use less common or technical vocabulary ('reversible turbines', 'national grid') are drawn directly from the prompt, but the student's own phrasing leads to unnatural collocations, such as 'water of entered toward dam'. These noticeable lexical errors and limitations place the response at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are poorly constructed attempts at complex sentences that result in severe grammatical errors, run-on structures, and missing punctuation. For instance, the opening sentence 'The process diagram illustrates, the procedure how electricity is produced...' contains an unnecessary comma and awkward phrasing. Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are problematic throughout, as seen in 'the water of a river flows... and ther water of the river goes... which opens... and remained close'. Frequent grammatical errors cause significant difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 5.0 descriptor.
