IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

This diagram represents the working of hydroelectric power station to generate electricity.

Overall, a dam is built on a river to store water and then it is released to harness the power of flow of water to generate electricity.

A dam is constructed on a live river to create a blockage which creates a reservoir and beneath the dam is a intake which closes druing the night and opens during daytime. The reserviours level is kept high in order to create pressure to generate electricity. At the end of intake line is the power station which consists a turbine which is reversible connected to a generator.

Flow of water is different during day and night. During day time flow is downwards or towards the low-level reservior and during night water is pumped back to high-level reservior from low-level reservior. The generator is transfers the generated electricity to power line then to the national grid.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main mechanism of the hydroelectric power station and comparing the day and night cycles. However, some aspects are under-developed or lack full clarity. While the overview outlines the basic storage and release of water, it misses a more integrated summary of the dual cycle. Additionally, some details regarding the components, such as the low-level reservoir and reversible turbines, are somewhat generalized and lack the precision seen in higher-band responses.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the dam and intake through the power station to the national grid and reservoirs. Paragraphing is utilized to separate the introduction, overview, and specific stages of the process. Nevertheless, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, seen in transitions like 'At the end of intake line', and referencing is not always completely clear, such as the pronoun use and abrupt linking between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, allowing the student to attempt less common terms related to the diagram, such as 'reservoir', 'reversible turbines', and 'national grid'. However, there are noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies that occur throughout the text, including 'druing', 'reserviours', and 'live river' instead of 'flowing or natural river'. These minor errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from rising further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, describing processes and states adequately. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('beneath the dam is a intake', 'consists a turbine'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward phrasing ('The generator is transfers'). Fortunately, these frequent minor errors rarely impede communication, keeping the grammar performance consistent with the expected standard for this level.
