IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given diagram illustrate the process of electricity generation in a hydroelectric power station. The process started with geting water from river and ended with same into a day night cycle.
Overall, it can be seen that the procedure contains eight stages and all steps plays crucial role in getting the desired result.
To commence with, the system begins when the ater from river is collected and sended to High level reservoir. In the day time water is flowed for electric generation to power station. Due to the flow of water the wings like structure rotate continuously by which electricity is generated by generato
Moving ahead with, in the following step the electricity is transfered to national grid via powerlines. The remaining water is sent to Low level reservoir. During the night time the water is pumped back throu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response falls below the required word count of 150 words, stopping at 139 words, which significantly impacts task completion. The student attempts to describe the process of electricity generation in a hydroelectric power station, but the coverage is incomplete and trails off abruptly at the end before detailing the full night-time cycle. While an overview is attempted, key features such as the day and night operating mechanisms of the intake and reversible turbines are only partially and inadequately outlined. Ideas are limited and under-developed due to the truncated length and lack of detail, preventing the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation with transitional phrases like 'Overall' and 'To commence with', but the text lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final section is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'Moving ahead with, in the following step', leading to a repetitive and disjointed flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the sequential stages of the diagram smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are several noticeable lexical errors, such as 'geting' instead of getting, 'sended' instead of sent, and 'ater' instead of water. Word choices are often simplistic and repetitive, and awkward collocations appear, such as 'wings like structure' instead of turbine blades. These errors and the restricted range of vocabulary cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of structures, with frequent basic grammatical errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'The given diagram illustrate', incorrect passive and active voice formations like 'water is flowed', and missing prepositions or articles. Attempts at complex sentences are generally faulty, and frequent errors in grammar and punctuation occur throughout, such as the missing full stop at the end of the text. These frequent errors can cause strain for the reader.
