IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The electricity is generated through many ways. One of them is hydroelectric power station. In this procedure the liver water is gathered in high level reservior that is called dam. A dam gate exists at the other end of high level reservior. That gate is specifically opens at day time and closed at night. When water is allowed to cross from intake gate the water flow downward to generate electricity. Then comes the power stationit consists a huge generator. Through this generator electricity is passes to power line and then national grid.On the other hand the at day time flow of water crossed through a narrow passage to low a level reservior from high level reservior. On contrast,at night water crossed from low level reservior to high level reservior through pumping.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main stages: water is stored behind the dam, released through the intake during the day, used to generate electricity, and returned from the low-level reservoir at night by pumping. However, the account is brief and does not clearly explain the full cycle or give a concise overview of the station’s two operating modes. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the high-level reservoir is not itself “called dam,” and the generator is connected to the reversible turbines, rather than simply appearing as the next stage after the water reaches the power station. The response also falls 23 words short of the required minimum. Develop the process more fully and distinguish the dam, reservoirs, turbines and generator.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response follows a broadly understandable order, moving from water storage to daytime generation and then nighttime pumping. Phrases such as “On the other hand” and “On contrast” attempt to signal the change between the two operating modes. However, the progression is not consistently clear: “Then comes the power station” interrupts the description of the water’s route, and the daytime movement to the low-level reservoir is repeated after the generator and grid. There is no paragraphing or clear overview to guide the reader, while several transitions are awkward or incorrectly used. Organise the response into an introduction and overview, followed by a clear account of the daytime and nighttime stages.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “intake,” “generator,” “power line,” “national grid,” and “pumping,” so the reader can recognise the subject. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling and collocation errors make parts difficult to interpret. “Liver water” appears to be an incorrect form of “river water”; “reservior” is repeatedly misspelled; and “a narrow passage” is less precise than “conduit” or “channel.” The phrase “electricity is passes” also reflects an incorrect word form. Aim for accurate technical terms and avoid repeating “water” and “flow” where more precise wording is available, such as “is conveyed” or “is pumped back.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response communicates the general process, but it relies mainly on simple statements and attempts at longer structures are often faulty. For example, “When water is allowed to cross from intake gate the water flow downward” has problems with articles, verb form and sentence construction. In “electricity is passes to power line,” the passive form is incorrect, while “the power stationit consists a huge generator” lacks punctuation and a required grammatical link. There are also inconsistent or missing articles and prepositions, as in “in high level reservior” and “from low a level reservior.” Use a small range of accurate sentence patterns first, then practise linking stages with correctly formed passive verbs, such as “Water is released” and “Electricity is transmitted.”
