IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates how sustainable hydroelectric power station generates electricity with assists from different infrastructures.

At the onset, water from nearby river enters into the high-level reservoir which eventually flows smoothly through a large pipe at broadlight where turbine blades attached at one end. Moreover, the process was reversed by pumping water from lower end to higher end at dark.

Additionally at the daylight, the flown water moves the turbine blades at a high speed which eventually results into proceed energy to generator attached at the top of power station.

Furthermore, generator powers up the energy and transfers it to solid grid lines which leads to supply electricity to the national grid system. Additionally, the water which was used to shift turbine blades was further transfered to low-level reservoir at day and at night the same reverse process propose in cycle.

To sum up, the system efficiently generates electricity by releasing water from high-level reservoir during the day and pumps the water up at night, allowing process to be repeated.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main cycle and give a clear overview: water is released from the high-level reservoir during the day, then pumped back at night. The account also includes the river, turbines, generator, power lines, national grid and low-level reservoir, so the key stages are recognisable. This strong coverage is why the response goes beyond a basic account. However, some details are unclear or imprecise: the intake’s daytime-open and nighttime-closed operation is not explained, and “the same reverse process” does not clearly state that the reversible turbines pump water from the low-level reservoir back uphill. The description of how the generator and turbines connect is also muddled. Clarifying these stages would make the process more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an opening, a sequence of process details, and a concluding summary. The progression from the reservoir to the power station and then to the national grid is generally logical, and time markers such as “at the daylight” and “at night” help distinguish the two operating phases. However, paragraphing is uneven, with several stages crowded into one paragraph, and connectors such as “Additionally” and “Furthermore” are used mechanically. Some references are difficult to follow: “the same reverse process” does not specify which components move the water back. Group the daytime and nighttime stages more clearly, and use precise references to the water, turbines and reservoirs to improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of process vocabulary, including “high-level reservoir,” “turbine blades,” “generator” and “national grid,” and the main subject remains understandable. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a technical process description. “At broadlight” and “at dark” are not suitable time expressions here; “flown water” and “proceed energy” obscure the intended meaning; and “solid grid lines” does not accurately describe power lines. Spelling and word-form slips such as “transfered” also reduce precision. Prefer standard process collocations and use the diagram’s labels where possible, such as “water flows through the turbines” and “electricity is transmitted to the national grid.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and longer sentences with clauses, for example the final sentence linking daytime release with nighttime pumping. This shows some structural range, and the overall meaning can usually be recovered. However, some sentence patterns are awkward or inaccurate, including “water from nearby river enters into the high-level reservoir” and “results into proceed energy to generator.” Articles, verb forms and prepositions need more consistent control, while the long sentence beginning “Additionally, at the daylight” combines several stages without clear grammatical relationships. The passive form would suit this process well: for example, “Water is released through the turbines, which drive the generator.” Aim for shorter, controlled sentences when describing each stage, while retaining a few accurate complex structures.
