IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In this picture shows that how hydroelectric power station generates electricity.
we can say that hydroelectric power station work in both day and night. The large flow of water generates electricity day Aad also in night the water pumps back to the high level reservoir. In whole process electricity produced.
In hydrorlelectric power station there is a river wich has a large amount of water called High level reservoir . In day river passes through dam wall and flow of water generates electricity and there is a reversible turbines which generates electricity . Electricity goes through power lines to the national grid.
In night shift there is a low level reservoir which pumps the water to the high level reservoir. tn power station there is a generator which pumps the water upward and then flow of water goes to high level reservoir . In this whole process large amount of electricity produce.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main contrast between daytime electricity generation and nighttime pumping, and mention several relevant components, including the reservoirs, turbines, generator, power lines and national grid. However, some process details are inaccurate or unclear: the river feeds the high-level reservoir rather than simply being a reservoir itself, and the water flows from the high-level reservoir through the turbines to the low-level reservoir during the day. At night, the reversible turbines pump water back uphill; the generator is not described as doing the pumping. Your overview also says electricity is produced throughout the whole process, which overlooks the nighttime storage cycle. A clearer, accurate account of both directions of water flow would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, a general summary, and separate descriptions of daytime and nighttime operation. This gives the reader some sense of the process, and the repeated references to “In day” and “In night” help distinguish the two stages. However, progression is not consistently clear because ideas are repeated or placed in confusing order. For example, the opening says water generates electricity “also in night,” then later explains that water is pumped back at night. Linking words and references are limited, and phrases such as “In whole process” do not clearly connect the stages. Organise the account in sequence, using clear transitions such as “During the day,” “After passing through,” and “At night.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “high level reservoir,” “reversible turbines,” “power lines,” and “national grid,” so the reader can recognise the main subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or imprecise. Calling the river a reservoir confuses two distinct features, while “large amount of water” and “large flow” are vague rather than useful descriptions of the process. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “hydrorlelectric” and “wich,” and awkward phrases such as “night shift” and “large amount of electricity produce.” Aim for precise process terms and standard collocations, for example “water flows through the turbines” and “electricity is transmitted to the national grid.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few longer sentences, but most structures are simple and several attempts are faulty, which sometimes makes the process difficult to follow. For example, “In this picture shows that how…” has an incorrect sentence structure, and “In whole process electricity produced” is missing necessary grammatical elements. Verb forms and agreement are also inconsistent in “turbines which generates electricity” and “electricity produce.” Articles and sentence boundaries need attention as well. Practise forming clear subject–verb sentences, such as “The turbines generate electricity during the day,” and use passive forms where appropriate: “Water is pumped back to the upper reservoir at night.” More accurate control of these basic patterns would improve clarity.
