IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The given process diagram illustrate the electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station. The process is a joint venture of humans and machines work together for a singal final product.Overall,it can be seen that hydroelectric power station process is carried out by following more than five distinctive steps.Addittionally, the process start from river the high level reservior and the ends at genrate the electricity the final product.Furthermore, all steps are very important and are the connected with each other.Talking about initial steps, first step is river, followed by the high lavel reservoir of dam, then flow water to generate electricity day time and the reversible turbines genrate the genrator genrate the eletricity and goes to power lines and store the national grid. All the processes complete almost half of the total procedure.Pouring some light the finalizing steps, these final step are very critical get the finished product.Furthermore, final product is obtained by flow the water to genrate the electricity and operate the genrater to work start the genrator .Hence the finished product is obtained by following different phases of the most genrated electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the topic as electricity generation and mentions several relevant labels, including the river, reservoir, turbines, generator, power lines and national grid. However, it only minimally reports how the system works and contains important inaccuracies: it says the process ends at the generator, whereas electricity is sent through power lines to the national grid, and it does not explain the low-level reservoir or the night-time pumping cycle. The overview that there are “more than five distinctive steps” is vague rather than a summary of the key feature: water flows downhill to generate electricity by day and is pumped back uphill at night. Focus on accurately describing both operating modes and the main stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to organise the response with an opening, an overview and phrases such as “Talking about initial steps” and “finalizing steps.” The sequence of some daytime stages is also recognisable. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the response does not clearly separate the overview from the process details, and the later section repeats ideas without explaining the night-time cycle. Connectors such as “Furthermore” are used repeatedly without showing a clear relationship between ideas, while “All the processes complete almost half” is unclear. Use distinct paragraphs and arrange the stages in order, with one section for daytime generation and another for night-time pumping.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “reservoir,” “reversible turbines,” “generator” and “national grid,” so the reader can identify the general subject. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “finished product,” “different phases” and repeated references to “genrate the electricity.” There are also frequent spelling errors, including “singal,” “reservior,” “Addittionally” and “eletricity,” which make the description less clear. Choose precise process language and check spelling carefully. For example, describe water as being “released” or “channelled” through the turbines, and state that electricity is “transmitted” to the national grid.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts longer sentences and uses sequencing language, but grammatical control is weak and errors frequently make relationships between stages unclear. The opening, “The given process diagram illustrate the electricity is generated,” has subject–verb agreement and clause-structure problems. Other examples include “the process start,” “these final step are,” and “the reversible turbines genrate the genrator genrate,” where verb forms, agreement and sentence construction are faulty. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops and commas. Build clearer sentences using a simple pattern such as “During the day, water flows from the upper reservoir through the turbines, which drive the generator.” Then check each sentence for a complete clause and correct verb agreement.
