IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates, that how the hydroelectric power station produced electricity.
Overall, it is crystal clear seen that the processing diagram generated electricity in hydroelectric power station in the several stages it was initiates with the river, by flowing with High-level reservoir from Dam. The water was passes through from several stages for generating energy. In the final stage we had produced high amount electricity from power station.
To begin with, the maximum amount of water passes through dam with the in the day time, highest flow of water to generate electricity. Moreover, its provide greatest energy, which was saving in electric generator, by passing water from power station with low-level reservoir.
On the other hand, the saving electricity were used for Local people, for their daily usage in the night time. Subsequently, the water flowing reverse from generator for the flow of water during pumping in night the Dam closed for providing hight source of energy for population usages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as hydroelectricity generation and mention several relevant components, including the river, reservoirs, dam, generator and power station. However, the account only partially explains the diagram’s key feature: its two-way day-and-night cycle. The daytime flow from the high-level reservoir through the turbines to the low-level reservoir is touched on, but the role of the generator and the transfer of electricity to the national grid are not clearly reported. More importantly, the response says electricity is stored and used by local people at night; the diagram instead shows water being pumped back uphill at night, with the intake closed. Give a clearer overview of this cycle and describe the stages accurately, without adding unsupported claims about consumers or energy storage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an opening, an overview-like paragraph and two body paragraphs, and phrases such as “To begin with” and “On the other hand” signal an attempt to organise the information. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the stages are not presented in a clear sequence, and the contrast between daytime generation and nighttime pumping is not explained accurately. Some links are also mechanical or confusing: “Moreover” does not clearly connect the daytime flow to the next point, while “Subsequently” introduces an unclear claim about electricity use. Organise the description around the two operating modes, using one paragraph for daytime flow and one for nighttime pumping, and use references such as “this water” only when their meaning is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “high-level reservoir,” “low-level reservoir,” “generator” and “pumping,” so the topic is recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the description imprecise. For example, “saving in electric generator” does not accurately describe electricity generation, and “maximum amount of water” and “greatest energy” introduce claims not shown in the diagram. “Processing diagram” is also an unsuitable label for this process. Aim for precise terms such as “water flows,” “drives the turbines,” “generates electricity” and “is transmitted to the national grid.” Check spelling and word forms, including “high” rather than “hight,” and avoid repeating general words such as “energy” when a specific process term is available.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There is an attempt to use both simple and longer sentence forms, but control is inconsistent, and errors frequently make relationships between stages difficult to understand. Examples include “the hydroelectric power station produced electricity,” where the tense does not suit a general process, and “The water was passes through,” which combines incompatible verb forms. Agreement and sentence construction are also problematic in “the saving electricity were used,” while “it was initiates” has an incorrect passive form. Punctuation is sometimes misplaced, as in “illustrates, that.” Practise describing processes in the present simple and passive voice: for example, “Water passes through the turbines” and “Electricity is sent to the national grid.” Build shorter, complete sentences before adding complex clauses.
