IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The presented diagram illustrates the production of the electricity in hydroelectric power station.
deep analysis of the given data reveals that this process involved several stages. This process is worked at day time and closed at night time.At initial level water is moved from high level reservoir to low reservoir and produced electricity.
To commence with,it can be witnessed that this process involves several stages. At initial level water is moved towards the high level reservoir and water intake is opened at that time. When water is flowed from high level reservoir to low level reservoir the power station is being installed at the lower level. The turbines is being installed in power station and when the water is flowed towards the turbines with high pressure although the turbines is moved.
further analyzing the diagram, it can be observed that when the turbines move it produced electricity and the generator is installed in the power station and when it produced electricity then these electricity is moved towards the power lines and national grids. At night time the low level reservoir water is moved towards the high level reservoir through the pump.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main components, including the reservoirs, intake, turbines, generator, power lines and national grid, and you mention that water is pumped back at night. However, the account only partially explains the process and contains a significant factual confusion: you say water initially moves towards the high-level reservoir, whereas during daytime it flows from the high-level reservoir through the turbines to the low-level reservoir. The overview that the process operates by day and is closed at night is also misleading, since the night stage involves pumping water back uphill. Explain the two operating cycles clearly and distinguish the daytime electricity-generation flow from the nighttime return flow.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: the response begins with an introduction, uses sequencing phrases such as “To commence with” and “further analyzing the diagram,” and separates the description into paragraphs. However, the progression is not consistently clear, and the repeated statements that the process has “several stages” do not help organise the information. The opening overview is followed by a confusing account of water movement, and the final paragraph shifts to electricity transmission and then back to nighttime pumping without clearly signalling the cycle. Some links, such as “although,” do not express the intended relationship. Group the response into a concise overview and a chronological description of the daytime and nighttime stages, using clear references to each cycle.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “reservoir,” “intake,” “turbines,” “generator” and “national grids,” so the reader can recognise the main equipment. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “To commence with” and “further analyzing.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive: “the production of the electricity,” “the power station is being installed,” and “the turbines is moved” do not describe the process naturally. “Deep analysis of the given data” is also unsuitable for a diagram summary. Aim for precise process verbs such as “flows,” “drives,” “generates” and “is pumped,” and use standard terms consistently, such as “the national grid.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts longer sentences and uses some sequencing clauses, but control is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the process difficult to follow. For example, “This process is worked at day time” has an incorrect passive construction, while “The turbines is being installed” has subject–verb disagreement and an inappropriate tense. In “when the turbines move it produced electricity,” the pronoun and verb form are unclear; “these electricity is moved” also has agreement and number errors. Articles and sentence boundaries are inconsistent, as in “at initial level” and the run-on opening after “stages.” Practise accurate present-simple descriptions of general processes, checking agreement, articles and punctuation in each sentence.
