IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The diagram illiustrate how the electricity is generated in hydroelectric power station day and night . The river moves water into dam to make electricity .Overall tha process involve two resevoir turbine and a generator .During the day water flow from high level resevoirto low level reservoir to produce electricity . In night water pump o back reservoir .River water is stored behind tha bdam in high levelreservoir During daytime it will be opened allow water to through a pipe toward the power station. As water to reversoble turbine to rotate and generate the generator . A fter passing through the turbine the water flow in lowlevel reservoir . In night time , the process is reversed . in night time the water can be flow back in dam direction and reversible direction to produce electricity . then it will be stored in power station to generate electricity . so the electricty is generated and stored in power station and further divided in transformer . Then we are used to electricty for thier purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the central contrast between daytime generation and nighttime pumping, and mention the high- and low-level reservoirs, turbines and generator. However, the process is only partly described and several details are inaccurate or unclear. For example, the intake is open during the day and closed at night, but this is not clearly explained. The statement that water is pumped back at night is relevant, yet “the water can be flow back in dam direction” does not accurately explain the return route through the reversible turbines to the high-level reservoir. You also introduce unsupported stages, including storage in the power station and distribution through a transformer. A clearer overview and a more accurate account of the two operating cycles would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to move from the daytime process to the nighttime process, and phrases such as “During the day” and “In night time” signal this contrast. However, the ideas are not arranged into clear stages or paragraphs, so the reader has to work to follow the sequence. The opening repeats information later, while the final sentences introduce electricity use and a transformer without a clear connection to the diagram. Some links are also difficult to interpret, as in “As water to reversible turbine to rotate and generate the generator.” Organise the response into an introduction and overview, followed by a paragraph for daytime operation and one for nighttime pumping. Use clear sequence markers and refer consistently to each component.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “high level reservoir,” “low level reservoir,” “reversible turbine,” and “generator,” which helps identify the main components. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts difficult to understand, such as “illiustrate,” “resevoir,” “reversoble,” and “electricty.” Some combinations are also unnatural or inaccurate: “generate the generator” and “stored in power station” do not express the process clearly. Aim to use precise process verbs and standard forms of the diagram labels, such as “flows,” “passes through,” and “is pumped back.” Avoid adding technical terms such as “transformer” unless they are shown in the visual.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to combine ideas using time clauses and sequencing, for example, “During daytime it will be opened allow water to through a pipe,” but these structures are often incomplete or incorrectly formed. Errors in verb forms and sentence construction occur throughout: “water can be flow back” should use a passive form, and “As water to reversible turbine to rotate” lacks a complete clause. Articles, prepositions and agreement are also inconsistent, as in “in hydroelectric power station” and “the process involve.” Most sentences are simple or fragments, and punctuation and capitalisation are unreliable. Practise building complete subject–verb sentences first, then add accurate clauses with “when,” “after,” and “while” to describe the stages.
