IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This below map gives information about eletricity is generated in a hyddroelectric power station. In day and night sees changes on hydroelectric power station.
Firstly, water coming from river and connated in dam all night dam story water and than in day gates are open for flowing dwon by water during pumping, water came to operate generator and slowly slowly flows low level reservoir to make elericity and than in uper side of systam have geneator of power sstation and pumping power line to national grid.
An other hand, In night shows some of changes dam gates in nights are closed and flow of water during pumping in a night likely hole system had a revers water flow uper side of dam to balance water system and in reversible turbines work pump water into higher-level reservoir to pumpimg flow and last end in dam. This procsess of making eletricity by hydroelectric power.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main subject and attempt to describe both the daytime and nighttime operation, including the reservoir, turbines and generator. However, the process is only partially reported, and several key relationships are unclear or inaccurate. For example, the daytime water flow is described as “during pumping,” although it flows down to drive the turbines and generate electricity; at night, the turbines pump water back to the high-level reservoir. The overview that “In day and night sees changes” does not clearly summarise this two-way cycle. The generator’s connection to the power lines and national grid is also confused as “pumping power line.” To improve, give a clear overview first, then accurately explain the daytime and nighttime stages in sequence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: the response uses separate paragraphs and signals a sequence with “Firstly” and a contrast with “In night.” It also attempts to cover the daytime process before the nighttime one. However, progression within the paragraphs is difficult to follow because several stages are joined into long, unclear sentences, such as the account beginning “water coming from river.” The linking phrase “An other hand” does not clearly express the relationship, and repeated references to “dam” and “water” do not help distinguish the reservoirs or stages. Organise the description into a brief overview followed by one paragraph for daytime and one for nighttime, using clear sequence markers and precise references to each component.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “reservoir,” “generator,” “reversible turbines,” and “national grid,” showing awareness of the diagram’s subject. However, the range is limited and many spelling and word-choice errors make the description harder to understand, for example “eletricity,” “hyddroelectric,” “connated,” and “systam.” Some phrases are also unsuitable for describing the process: “dam story water” and “slowly slowly flows” do not communicate the intended stages precisely. Build a reliable set of process terms and check spelling, especially for words taken directly from the diagram. Prefer precise verbs such as “flows,” “drives,” and “pumps” over vague or repeated wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to connect stages in longer sentences, but these structures are often faulty, and sentence boundaries are not consistently controlled. For instance, “Firstly, water coming from river and connated in dam all night” lacks a clear finite verb and has an incomplete construction; “in day gates are open for flowing dwon by water” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between the clauses. Articles and verb forms are frequently missing or inaccurate, as in “from river” and “water came to operate generator.” The sentence beginning “An other hand” does not form a complete, clear contrast. Use shorter, complete sentences first, with a clear subject and verb, then practise joining stages with accurate clauses and punctuation.
