IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given diadram repersented the information how hydroelectricity powe satation is generated electricity
To start with, firsty water collect from dams and check the high level of reservoir at dam. Then, durind day flow of water generated electricity and during night the flow of water is pumping.it only take in day or night ,the reversiable turbines operate generated during the day but the pumping the water into high level reservoir doing at night. this prpcess is continously repteting day and night. Moreover,at the power of station, build power lines and joint into national grid.
Overall, the process of making electricity in hydroelectricity station is smooth and easy due to the given steps which helps to make it complete.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main subject and mention the day/night cycle, reversible turbines, the high-level reservoir, and the national grid. However, the account only partially covers the process: it does not clearly explain that water travels from the high-level reservoir through the turbines to the low-level reservoir during the day, then is pumped back at night. The statement that water is collected “from dams” is also unclear, and the overview that the process is “smooth and easy” is an unsupported evaluation rather than a summary of its key features. The response is below the required 150 words, so several important stages and relationships remain undeveloped. Describe the full cycle accurately and use the overview to highlight the contrasting daytime and nighttime operations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic sequence, signalled by “To start with” and references to “during day” and “during night,” and the final sentence attempts to provide an overall statement. These features give the reader some sense of the process. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the opening moves from water collection to reservoir level, then to day/night operation, without explaining the route between the reservoirs. “Moreover” introduces the power lines after the cycle, but the connection between these ideas is not clear. The response is also presented as one paragraph, making the stages difficult to distinguish. Organise it into an overview and a chronological description, using clear links such as “During the day” and “At night” to show the two directions of flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt relevant process vocabulary, including “reservoir,” “reversible turbines,” “pumping,” “power lines,” and “national grid.” This gives the response a minimally adequate set of terms for the topic. However, spelling errors such as “diadram,” “repersented,” and “repteting” are frequent and make parts of the text harder to understand. Several word combinations are also inaccurate or unclear, including “water collect from dams,” “the power of station,” and “build power lines.” Use precise process language and check spelling carefully. For example, describe water as flowing from the high-level reservoir, passing through the turbines, and entering the low-level reservoir; this would make the stages clearer and avoid awkward phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example, “during night the flow of water is pumping,” and uses time references to describe the cycle. However, sentence structures are limited and many attempts at complex sentences are faulty. Errors include missing or incorrect articles and verb forms in “water collect from dams,” “the reversiable turbines operate generated,” and “the pumping the water … doing at night.” Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and sentence boundaries that are difficult to follow. These problems sometimes obscure who or what performs each action. Practise clear present-simple process sentences, such as “At night, the turbines pump water back into the high-level reservoir,” and check subject–verb agreement and articles.
