IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrate that how electricity is generated in hydroelectric power station.
Overall, the diagram shows that how electricity make through hydroelectric power station. The water comes through the river and passes out the whole process and finally it generates through power station.
Hydro means water and electric means current. It means it generate electricity by using water. As shown in the figure, water comes through river, subsequently water collect in dam.Next the flow of water generate electricity and it is the day time process. Moreover, water moves towards reversible turbines in which water pushes upward direction and moves towards generator. In day time reversible turbine works as a generator and the whole system called power station. While in night time reversible turbine works opposite. It pump water from lower concentration to higher concentration in night while in day time it works opposite. In day time it pump water from higher concentration to lower concentration. Furthermore, when water pass through reversible turbines and moves towards generator it make electricity. After that, water passes through powers lines and then moves towards national grid. Finally, the electricity built through this whole process and we use it in our daily life.Electricity is essential part of our life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main subject and include a broad overview, noting that water moves through the station and that the system operates differently by day and night. You also mention the turbines, generator, power lines and national grid, so several key components are covered. However, some important stages are unclear or inaccurately described: the water flows downward from the high-level reservoir through the turbines during the day, rather than pushing upward towards the generator, and electricity is sent to the grid while water continues to the low-level reservoir. The night-time pumping cycle is mentioned, but the intake’s closure at night and the return of water to the upper reservoir could be explained more precisely. Focus on describing the complete cycle accurately and omit general comments about electricity’s importance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has separate opening, overview and process paragraphs, and it uses sequencing words such as “Next,” “Moreover,” “After that” and “Finally.” These help the reader recognise that you are describing stages. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the account moves between the daytime and night-time processes, then returns to daytime details, making the cycle difficult to follow. Some links are repetitive or awkward, particularly repeated uses of “In day time” and “Furthermore.” The overview also repeats the introduction rather than clearly summarising the main contrast. Organise the body in a clear sequence—daytime flow first, followed by the reverse night-time process—and use references such as “this water” only when their meaning is unmistakable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use several relevant process terms, including “reversible turbines,” “generator,” “power lines” and “national grid,” which show awareness of the diagram’s subject. However, the vocabulary is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, reducing precision. “Water collect in dam” does not clearly describe the high-level reservoir, while “lower concentration” and “higher concentration” are not appropriate for describing the reservoirs’ relative levels. Phrases such as “electricity built” and “passes out the whole process” also make the meaning less clear. Aim to use precise terms for movement and location, such as water being stored, released, channelled, pumped back, or flowing to a lower reservoir. Avoid adding general expressions that do not describe the process.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “when,” and the reader can understand the general topic. However, errors are frequent, and complex sentences are often not controlled successfully. For example, “The diagram illustrate that how electricity is generated” has subject–verb agreement and clause-structure problems, while “water collect in dam” and “it generate electricity” contain agreement errors. Articles and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “in hydroelectric power station” and the run-on ending “daily life.Electricity.” These problems sometimes make the process difficult to follow. Practise accurate present-simple descriptions, checking subject–verb agreement, articles and punctuation, and build longer sentences from correctly formed clauses.
