IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, many people have this belief that a better way of creating harmony and love among different cultures and people with different age groups is through good music. I believe that this is true to some extent since it has both positive as well as some negative aspects.
One of the positive aspects of this view is that people from a large variety of different cultures and languages get to experience each others art values and customs. For example, a song in one language can involve a tune or lyrics that might be loved and appreciated by people from another culture. Also some some music includes tunes which can be liked by a number of different cultures. People can get to know a versatile range of music through each others songs. Good music can also produce harmonious and friendly relationships among people from different age groups. For instance, if they have a similar taste in music they are likely to enjoy each others company.
On the other hand this can also have some negative aspects. Firstly, different cultures sometimes don't understand or approve of certain kinds of music or songs. For example, if a singer uses a song from a different language or culture and sings it in his own style or adds something different to it for personalization, then certain people might disapprove with that song and give negative remarks. Secondly, music and song production of young generation is quite different from that of old age, therefore, they might criticize or dislike each others musical preferences.
In summary, my opinion is that good music and songs can be a source of bringing people from different backgrounds and age groups closer together, but there might be certain differences leading to criticism and disapproval.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you agree to some extent, while recognising that musical preferences can also divide people. You address both cultures and age groups, and the examples about appreciating songs across languages and sharing musical tastes are relevant. This covers the task well, but the two sides are not equally developed. The positive points are explained with examples, whereas the negative discussion relies mainly on hypothetical disapproval and criticism; it would be stronger with a specific, plausible situation and a clearer explanation of how this limits music’s unifying effect. The conclusion restates your balanced view. To develop the response further, explain more precisely when music brings people together and why this effect may not apply to everyone.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your qualified position, the second paragraph presents benefits, the third considers drawbacks, and the conclusion summarises your view. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “For example,” “On the other hand,” and “In summary” help readers follow the argument. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the repeated “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “For example.” There is also some repetition of “people,” “music,” and “different cultures,” and references such as “this” in “this can also have some negative aspects” could identify the idea more precisely. Use a wider range of transitions and clearer referencing, while keeping the logical structure that already works well.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “harmony,” “customs,” “appreciated,” “musical preferences,” and “disapprove.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “art values,” “a versatile range of music,” and “negative remarks.” Some collocations also need refinement: “disapprove with that song” is not natural, and “old age” is an unsuitable way to refer to older people. Repetition of “good music,” “people,” and “different” limits flexibility. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check how words combine in natural English; this will make your argument sound more fluent and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the conditional sentence “if they have a similar taste in music they are likely to enjoy each others company” and a longer example beginning “if a singer uses a song…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “each others art values” and “each others company” need possessive apostrophes, while “some some music” contains an accidental repetition. The sentence “music and song production of young generation is quite different” has problems with articles and agreement. Punctuation is also inconsistent, including missing commas after introductory phrases such as “Also.” Review possessives, articles, subject–verb agreement, and sentence punctuation, then proofread for repeated words.
