Student answer (Band 6.5)

Throughout the centuries music played a big role into peoples lives. Music was used as a tool to express feelings, history events and hope for the future. There are different types of music and they differ from each other in the way of interpretation, instruments and the meaning. Every culture has their own music that was been transferred from centuries.

In this essay I would like to talk about my country's music and its power to bring people together. Centuries ago we had what is called "Kenget Kreshnike". "Kenget Kreshnike" are song that were written for our national heroes and still in this day our heroes are remembered with these song. In my country music as a form of resilience in tough times where the war was happening.

During the war many young men and women joined the army after listening to the music that had a strong message. While the war was taking place here, most of the young people were in different states and with the power of lyrics in the songs that interpretated the bravery and the love for our country they decided to come back and fight for our country's freedom. After our country's independence we still gather for special occasions and remember our history by listening to these songs. Something I want to mention in this essay is the fact that we have our own national instrument and it's called "Okarina". This instrument has been found by archeologists in ancient remains and it's a prove of our old and rich history. Okarina is acknowledged and protected by UNESCO.

People from many countries and different ages that visited Kosovo really enjoyed our music and were very interested in the history of our music. So by ending this essay i really can agree that music play a very big role to bring people of different cultures and ages together.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the role of music in bringing people together, specifically through the lens of national identity and history. However, the development is somewhat narrow, focusing almost exclusively on the author's personal experience in Kosovo. While the prompt asks for an opinion on the general ability of music to bridge cultural and age gaps, the essay lacks a broader discussion of how music functions globally or across different generations. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments could be more balanced by considering counter-arguments or broader societal examples to fully satisfy the 'to what extent' requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from the general role of music to specific national examples. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'In my country' or 'this essay'. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the discussion of war and the mention of the 'Okarina' instrument feels slightly abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the overall flow could be improved with more sophisticated linking words to connect ideas between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'resilience', 'independence', and 'archeologists'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing or word choice, such as 'history events' instead of 'historical events' and 'it's a prove' instead of 'it's proof'. The repetition of basic words like 'big' and 'music' suggests a need for a wider range of synonyms to demonstrate more flexibility and precision in expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and prepositions, such as 'music played a big role into peoples lives' (in people's lives) and 'that was been transferred' (that has been transferred). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
