Student answer (Band 7.0)

According to a few individuals, people from various backgrounds and ages can get connected by a way of music. I strongly agree with this statement because music is a common language by which people can express their feelings to each other.

Music is a creative way of demonstrating individuals emotions. It possesses the power to bring people close together. A great tune can be a way of communication for people of different cultures. Music has been a scientifically proven way of calming down a stressful mind. It will have a significant effect on the reduction of a person's anxiety. Many individuals enjoy listening to international songs by which they can get familiar with multiple cultures.

In addition to that people love to listen to songs while working together because music can make activity more fun. For instance, sometimes mothers would sing a song in order to calm down their crying infants, which is a good example of a mother's love. Furthermore, traditional folk songs are much popular nowadays among different cultures, for example, famous garba songs from the Indian state of Gujarat are internationally played for dance within community, a way of spreading happiness and prosperity among society. Children can become more creative under the influence of music. It should be a part of the education system so that from a younger age the youth can learn innovative ways of communication.

In conclusion, music plays a vital role in building relationships between people of different cultures and among generations. I am inclined to believe that music spreads positivity, love and friendship, which should be a vital part of a society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the role of music in communication and cultural exchange. However, some points are slightly under-developed; for instance, the mention of music in the education system is a strong idea but lacks sufficient explanation to fully support the argument. The examples provided, such as the Garba dance, are relevant and help illustrate the points made. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point is fully explored with a clear link back to the main argument regarding cultural and generational unity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that', 'For instance', and 'Furthermore' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be better connected to improve the overall progression of the argument. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some good topic-specific vocabulary like 'innovative', 'prosperity', and 'scientifically proven'. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'a way of music' (should be 'through music') and 'much popular' (should be 'very popular'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the control is not always precise. To improve, focus on using collocations more naturally and avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'a way of' which appears multiple times.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'demonstrating individuals emotions' (missing apostrophe) and 'a way of music' (preposition error). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor slips throughout. To achieve a higher band, aim for greater accuracy in complex sentence construction and ensure subject-verb agreement and article usage are consistent.
