Student answer (Band 7.5)

Many people believe that music has an extraordinary capacity to forge human connections across different ethnicities and ages. On the other hand, others think that music alone cannot fill the gap. I tend to agree for most of the part; music naturally bridges gaps between people, even if it does not solve every divide.

First and foremost, music is the universal activity enjoyed by people of all ages and cultures across the world. Regardless of a person's financial condition, background, or daily struggles, the ecstasy of melodies and songs has been shared among humans in the form of concerts, award shows, or opening ceremony performances in sports. The audience admires the performances and vibes with them. Every age group gets connected to the rhythm despite being from different countries. It is also beneficial in treating depression and other mental illnesses.

Furthermore, music helps eliminate cultural and language barriers. Experiencing songs from different cultures exposes listeners to unique traditions and values. It often inspires them to know more about the culture and traditions. For instance, the Urdu language is only spoken in Pakistan, but there are some songs that are being streamed in different parts of the world, which have reached millions of people. In addition, it effortlessly breaks the language barrier. A listener does not need to understand every word to feel the emotion behind the song. In this way, appreciation for music encourages cultural empathy and deeper global understanding.

All in all, music is a powerful way to bond people of various cultures and ages. It may not resolve every complex social divide. Its unique ability to transcend language and differences in cultures allows people from all walks of life to connect on a deeper level.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position and supporting it with relevant examples. The essay explores both the cultural and age-related aspects of the prompt effectively. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the point regarding the emotional connection to music despite language barriers. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, concrete examples of how music bridges age gaps, as the current focus leans more heavily toward cultural barriers. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In addition' to guide the reader through your arguments. The progression of ideas is smooth, and each paragraph has a clear central theme. Paragraphing is used appropriately. To improve, ensure that the transition between the idea of 'mental health' and 'cultural barriers' is more seamless, as the current jump feels slightly abrupt. Overall, the flow of information is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'extraordinary capacity,' 'transcend,' and 'cultural empathy' effectively. There is an attempt to use less common lexical items, which adds precision to your writing. However, there are some minor collocation issues, such as 'vibes with them' (which is informal) and 'for most of the part' (which should be 'for the most part'). Expanding your use of academic collocations would help elevate the score further. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and with some style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your control of grammar is generally good. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'music is the universal activity' (should be 'a universal activity') and 'songs that are being streamed' (which is slightly wordy). You have a good grasp of punctuation and sentence construction. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or more sophisticated relative clauses.
