Student answer (Band 5.5)

In modern societies, there is an ongoing debate on music. Some people believe that it is a good source to connect people of different ages, associated with different culture. I strongly agree with this opinion, and I will discuss my view with examples.

I believe that listening music is a refreshing activity for people of all age groups, from infants to youngers, or even for elderly individuals. For instance, it is a common practice to play different poems and rhymes to calm down the crying babies and same music is also played in playgroups for students all over the world. In addition, the teenagers like to listen trending songs while traveling or in free-time. However, mature people also enjoy the same songs, while doing yoga or exercise.

People who are fond of music, enjoy to listen it, no matter which culture or country they belong to. This is a common feature in all music lovers, and it connects them across the boundaries. Pupil of different countries, who are passionate about music, consider it as a nutrition for their souls. Moreover, people not only listen the music in their native language, but they also enjoy music in other languages and it connects them with other individuals, who have same music preferences. For example, people of different age groups, having same music choices go to concerts and theatres, where new songs or albums are released, and they them enjoy with one another.

In conclusion, music is considered as a major source to network people of different age groups having same music choices, even associated with different backgrounds and cultures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the role of music in calming infants and its function as a social bridge at concerts. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding 'nutrition for their souls' is a bit vague and lacks concrete explanation. While the task is addressed, the supporting examples could be more detailed to fully explore the 'extent' of the agreement. The conclusion is brief and merely restates the introduction rather than synthesizing the main points effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Moreover', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the sentence 'they them enjoy with one another', which disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the discussion of age from the discussion of culture, which helps the reader follow the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'music' and 'people'. While there are attempts at less common collocations such as 'trending songs' and 'mature people', there are also awkward word choices like 'nutrition for their souls' and 'network people' (used as a verb). Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'listening music' (should be 'listening to music'), 'enjoy to listen it' (should be 'enjoy listening to it'), and 'they them enjoy' (a syntax error). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to indicate a lack of control over more complex structures. Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction often feels slightly unnatural.
