Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people think that music is the fantastic way of connecting individuals of diverse cultures, ages and ethnicities. I agree with this sentiment because I believe that music has universal appeal and fandoms create a sense of community.

Music is an universal way of bringing people together. Beats, tunes and rhythm transcends the language barrier. This is why people from diverse demographics can dance along even though they do not share the same language. For instance, K-pop has recently seen a significant growth in popularity outside of South Korea. A concert in New York featuring the girl group will attract audiences of many different ages, ethnicities and religions. A quick glance of the arena would demonstrate the influence of the Korea aesthetic through outfits, makeup and hairstyles.

Fandoms create a sense of community. Artists are able to create a shared emotional experience which connects them to their fans but more importantly connects their fans to each other despite their diversity. Taylor Swift fans famously known as "Swifties" are a perfect example. The vulnerability of her lyrics appeal to a 16 year old as much as a 60year old when their belting a song at her concert, at party, in a car or even a wedding. This demonstrates that people of all ages are able to relate to an artist that they love and share that experience with others, sometimes not having anything else in common.

In conclusion, I agree with people that believe that music brings communities together through universal rhythm and fan groups transcending their cultural and ethnic barriers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position and supporting it with relevant examples such as K-pop and Taylor Swift. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of how shared emotional experiences foster community. The essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic throughout. To reach a higher band, the student could further explore the 'age' aspect of the prompt, as the current focus leans more heavily on cultural and fan-based connections. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'For instance' and 'In conclusion,' though some transitions could be more varied to enhance the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The referencing is generally clear, and the logical flow ensures the reader can follow the argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses some effective collocations like 'universal appeal' and 'shared emotional experience.' However, there are minor inaccuracies, such as 'the fantastic way' (should be 'a fantastic way') and 'Korea aesthetic' (should be 'Korean aesthetic'). While the range is adequate, incorporating more sophisticated or precise academic vocabulary would elevate the score. The errors present do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more attention to word form and article usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Music is an universal way' (should be 'a universal way') and 'when their belting' (should be 'when they are belting'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in '60year old'. Despite these slips, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding. To improve, the student should focus on article usage and subject-verb agreement to increase the number of error-free sentences.
