IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, residents argue that music is a good source of connecting people from different cultures and ages together. I agree to a large extent with this argument and I shall provide my reasoning along with a opinion and conclusion.

First and foremost, individuals contend that music is highly respected in all cultures around the globe because it's a source of entertainment and happiness. They believe that in a globally-connected world, people can listen music of all the singers of other nations. For instance, they consider that the popularity of Taylor Swift is paramount in both India and America. Furthermore, they believe that elderly Indian population listen to Justin Beiber the same way as the young residents enjoy.

Equally important, the general public assert that it is a common practice in India to listen both foreign and local music during weddings. Moreover, it was widely reported in media few years ago that business tycoon Mukesh Ambani invited American signers to perform at the wedding ceremony of his son.

By contrast, many people hold the view that foreign music doesn't provide any entertainment to local public because they are not familiar with foreign languages. Although this argument feels genuine, but music is not enjoyed by understanding the words only. Voice delivery and sounds of musical instruments are important factors in popularity of a song rather than words.

In my opinion, music is an excellent way of connecting citizens all over the world because it provides entertainment, pleasure and fun to the residents of various cultures and ages. Therefore, I share this view to a large extent.

In conclusion, although foreign music can be, sometimes, difficult to understand but a large proportion of individuals don't focus on the words and enjoy the overall music. Hence, Music is a great way to bring people together from different nations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt well, maintaining a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the role of music in weddings and its cross-cultural appeal. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the conclusion and the body paragraphs, where the same points about 'entertainment' and 'pleasure' are restated. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the 'age' aspect of the prompt more deeply, as the current focus is heavily skewed toward cultural connection. The examples provided, such as the mention of Taylor Swift and Mukesh Ambani, are relevant and support your argument effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Furthermore', 'Equally important', and 'By contrast' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the connection between the paragraphs could be more sophisticated. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument, which helps maintain a coherent flow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'paramount', 'contend', and 'business tycoon'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'residents argue' (instead of 'people' or 'some argue') and 'American signers' (a spelling error for 'singers'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some phrases are slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without causing confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'listen music' (should be 'listen to music'), 'elderly Indian population listen' (subject-verb agreement), and 'Although this argument feels genuine, but' (a redundant conjunction error). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, work on eliminating these basic errors and increasing the variety of complex structures, such as using more advanced conditional sentences or passive voice constructions to enhance the sophistication of your writing.
