Student answer (Band 6.0)

This is a statement that really hits home to me. I strongly believe that music transcends borders, languages, communities and even ages. Music is an art form that unites people like no other, truly. The perfect example of this could be the growing popularity of Kpop as well as Latin songs. Although English songs are considered the standard, artists and musicians of different cultures are now challenging that notion. Global icons like Bad Bunny, BTS, Shakira and many more have released absolute hits and have grown in popularity. It is an absolute sight to see BTS perform Korean songs in foreign stadiums filled with non-korean speakers, and yet, the energy in that area is unreal. The beats, the emotions that the artists evoke is something that fans or music listeners truly enjoy. Another popular example for this could be how the FIFA anthems are always Spanish songs sung by none other than Shakira herself. Waka Waka & Dai Dai have gone viral with people all over the world grooving the music and enjoying themselves. I would even argue that couples in the current generation also gauge at their musical compatibility with their partners. The ability to share songs, sing along with your loved ones is in fact a treat to devour. Music also has the beauty of immortality, with songs being as old as the 70s still being sung by the current generations. After all, music has the tendency to make one let loose and be lost in its beats, no matter the language or age.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position that music acts as a unifying force. You provide relevant examples, such as the global popularity of K-pop and Latin music, to support your argument. However, the essay is quite short, barely meeting the minimum requirement. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat under-developed. For instance, the point about musical compatibility in relationships is introduced but not fully explored in relation to the broader theme of cultural or age-related unity. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your arguments with more depth and ensure that all parts of the prompt—specifically the 'ages' aspect—are addressed with equal weight to the 'cultures' aspect.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is coherent and follows a logical progression. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although', 'Another popular example', and 'After all', to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is a significant issue; the entire response is written as a single block of text. For an IELTS essay, you must use clear paragraph breaks to separate your introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. This lack of structure makes the essay feel like a continuous stream of thought rather than a well-organized academic argument. Improving your paragraphing will significantly enhance the logical flow and readability of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'transcends borders', 'global icons', and 'musical compatibility'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'gauge at their musical compatibility' (which should be 'gauge their musical compatibility') and 'treat to devour' (which is a bit informal and slightly odd in this context). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the overall range is somewhat limited. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your word choices are appropriate for a formal academic essay rather than a casual blog post.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'The beats, the emotions that the artists evoke is something' (subject-verb agreement error: 'beats and emotions' are plural, so 'are' is required). Another example is 'grooving the music', which is not a standard collocation. Despite these errors, your meaning is consistently clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, aim for more variety in your complex sentence structures and proofread carefully to eliminate minor subject-verb agreement and prepositional errors.
