IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people believe that music is an effective way of bringing people of different cultures and age groups together. I strongly agree with this opinion because music is universal form of communication and can create opportunities for people to share their traditions and experiences.
Firstly, music can connect people even when they speak different languages. People can enjoy a song because of its melody, rhythm and emotions without understanding every word. International music festivals are a good example of this. People from different countries attend these events, listen to various types of music and enjoy them together. As a result, they can develop an interest in other cultures and become more open-minded towards people from different backgrounds.
Secondly, music can reduce the gap between different generations. Although young and older people may have different lifestyles, they can often enjoy music together. For example, parents may introduce traditional songs to their children, while young people may share modern music with their parents. This exchange allows family members to understand each other's interests and can strengthen their relationships. In addition, traditional music helps younger generations lean about the history and culture of their communities.
However, music cannot solve every cultural or generational difference. People may have different musical tastes, and some types of music may be associated with particular cultures or age groups. Nevertheless, music generally provides a positive environmental in which people can interact and find common interests.
To sum up, I strongly agree that music is a powerful way of bringing people from different cultures and age groups together. It can overcome language barriers, encourage cultural understanding and reduce the gap between generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The arguments regarding music as a universal language and a bridge between generations are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as international music festivals and family musical exchanges. The ideas are extended logically, and the inclusion of a counter-argument in the third paragraph demonstrates a balanced approach, showing a sophisticated understanding of the topic. The conclusion effectively summarises the main points without introducing new information. The response is well-developed and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'To sum up'. The use of referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is sufficient and appropriate. The flow of information is natural, and the reader can easily follow the writer's line of reasoning. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, and the structure supports the overall argument effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The writer uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'universal form of communication', 'open-minded', 'generational difference', and 'cultural understanding'. While the range is adequate for a high score, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest band. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede meaning. The language used is natural and fits the academic context well, demonstrating a good level of control over the vocabulary chosen.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'music is universal form' (missing an article) and 'positive environmental' (should be 'environment'). However, these are rare and do not impede communication. The control over punctuation and sentence construction is strong, allowing for a clear and professional tone. The writer shows the ability to use complex structures, such as conditional and concessive clauses, effectively throughout the response.
