Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people believe that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. I strongly agree with this view because music promotes cultural unity and helps bridge the gap between different generations.

Firstly, music can connect people from different cultural backgrounds by providing them with a shared interest. Music is a universal form of communication, and people can enjoy a song even when they do not understand its language. For example, international music concerts attract audiences from various countries and cultural backgrounds who gather to enjoy the same performances. Despite their differences in language, traditions and lifestyles, they share the same experience and enthusiasm for music. As a result, such events can encourage cultural exchange and help people develop greater respect for other cultures.

Secondly, music can also bring people of different ages closer together. Although younger and older generations may have different preferences, they can often find common ground through music. For instance, during Navratri celebrations in Gujarat, children, teenagers, adults and elderly people gather together to perform Garba and enjoy traditional music. This gives different generations an opportunity to participate in the same activity, communicate with one another and create shared memories. In addition, younger people can learn traditional songs and dances from older generations, helping to preserve cultural traditions.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that music is especially effective in bringing people together. It can promote interaction between individuals from different cultures and also create stronger connections between different generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding cultural unity and intergenerational connection. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the example of Navratri celebrations, which adds depth to the argument. However, the response is 248 words long, failing to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. This minor omission in length, combined with the fact that the ideas could have been slightly more extended to reach the word count, limits the score. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and ideas flow smoothly from one to the next. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'For example', 'As a result', and 'In addition' are used effectively to link sentences and arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main themes of culture and age. The progression of ideas is clear, and the referencing is consistent throughout the text, making the essay easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision. The student uses appropriate terms such as 'cultural backgrounds', 'universal form of communication', and 'common ground'. While the range is adequate, it does not consistently demonstrate the 'less common' lexical items required for a higher band. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors, and the language used is natural and appropriate for an academic context. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Examples of complex structures include 'Although younger and older generations may have different preferences, they can often find common ground through music.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is strong. While the range of structures is good, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more varied subordinate clauses or advanced grammatical forms to achieve a higher score.
