Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that music acts as a bridge between people of various culture and ages. I completely agree with the idea that people living in different cultures and age groups can come closer through music.

There are a number of reasons why I believe music is a good option to gather people of different traditions and ages. One possible reason is that music is admired all over the world and each country has their special kind of music in which they try to portray their culture. For instance, during FIFA worldcup every host country launches a song where they show their tradition. A famous song 'Waka Waka' sung by Sakira was launched during FIFA worldcup 2010 where the culture and tradition of South Africa was effectively portrayed. Furthermore, music has a variety of genres such as Jazz, Classical, Salsa. This music helps to bring individuals together.

In addition, music is loved by all ages of people. I remember my grandmother used to listen to Rabindra Sangeet in her leisure time. Often I gave company to her and she explained to me the value of this song. It helped a lot to create an incredible bond with my grandparents. Finally, some music is timeless and this is listened by all aged people. For example, 'Amar Poran Jaha Chai' is a song written by Rabindranath Tagore is adimed by individuals from teenagers to elders, merging classic and contemporary style.

In conclusion, considering the factors discussed above, I believe people of various cultures and ages can be brought together by music.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, particularly the example of the FIFA World Cup and the personal anecdote regarding the grandmother. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. While the examples are clear, they could be expanded with more analytical depth to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main supporting arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition' are used to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the personal example and the broader argument could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the specific song mentioned and the broader concept of 'timelessness' could be more explicitly stated to improve the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. There are some attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'genres', 'contemporary', and 'portrayed'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'gather people' (better: 'bring people together') and 'all aged people' (better: 'people of all ages'). To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items and ensure more precise collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, and the meaning is never obscured by errors. However, there are several minor grammatical slips, such as 'various culture' (should be plural 'cultures'), 'every host country launches a song where they show their tradition' (subject-verb agreement/pronoun reference), and 'is listened by all aged people' (passive voice error: 'is listened to by people of all ages'). Increasing the variety of complex structures and refining accuracy would improve the score.
