Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, music is becoming a growing trend with the passage of time. It is considered as a universal language that connects people of different cultures and ages together. I strongly agree with the opinion that music is a language that connects peoples and emotions regardless of culture and age.

Firstly, people from different cultures loves to listen and sing music. It unite peoples by bringing them to a common platform where they share traditional style and cultural background. Everyone have its own taste of music. When listen to music, it feels like our emotions are coming out. Generally, music is full of emotions. Some people like foreign music. For example, a concert was held internationally, musicians sang different songs as they have different backgrounds, cultures, and languages but audience enjoyed concert although some did not understand the music.

Secondly, music can bring people of different generations together. People may have different preferences and some genres may be popular among some age groups.

For example, parents may share some songs from their youth with their children while, younger people of family also introduce some songs of modern era with older family members. In addition, people may listen some traditional songs at weddings or functions while they may also enjoy contemporary music. This strengthen bonds between people of different culture and background.

However, music alone cannot remove cultural or generational differences. People of different age groups have their own choices and some genera may be popular among peoples but music is the simplest way of providing opportunities to people of different culture and background to strengthen their bonds and remain connected with each other.

In conclusion, I strongly agree with opinion that music is a good way to bring people together regardless of culture and background. It promotes culture and reduce difference between generations and brings people together.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of music as a bridge between cultures and ages. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of international concerts and family interactions at weddings. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the example of the concert is a bit vague, and the explanation of how music bridges generational gaps could be more deeply explored with more specific analysis. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more detailed explanations of 'why' and 'how' music functions in these contexts, rather than just stating that it does.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' are used, but there is a lack of more sophisticated linking words or transitions between sentences to create a smoother flow. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the discussion of cultural differences and generational gaps. Improving the variety of your cohesive devices will help the essay read more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'contemporary music', 'traditional style', and 'generational differences'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'music is becoming a growing trend' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'some genera' (likely a misspelling of 'genres'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express your ideas with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the writing. Common issues include subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'people from different cultures loves', 'Everyone have its own taste') and missing articles or incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'listen some traditional songs'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, you need to focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and increasing the variety of complex structures used without sacrificing precision.
