IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

According to some individuals, music is an effective way to eliminate differences between people from different cultures and generations. I completely agree with this view because music can overcome language barriers and create a sense of connection between people of different ages.

The main reason why music can bring people together is that it can overcome language barriers between different cultures. People can enjoy music even if they are unable to understand its lyrics. For instance, a foreigner may not understand the lyrics of a Hindi song, but they can still appreciate its melody and instrumental sounds. As a result, music can introduce people to Indian traditions and culture without requiring them to understand the language. In this way, music can promote cultural understanding and reduce differences between people from different backgrounds.

Moreover, people from different generations may share similar musical tastes, which can create a strong sense of connection between them. Although children, young people and older adults may have different lifestyles, they can still enjoy the same genres of music and experience similar emotions. For example, grandparents, parents and children may listen to the same songs at family gatherings and enjoy the experience together. Similarly, energetic music played at a public event can attract people from different age groups. When they dance or sing along to the same songs, they can experience a shared sense of enjoyment and emotional connection despite their age differences.

In conclusion, music is a powerful medium that can connect different generations and cultural groups. It is not merely a collection of words and lyrics; rather, it allows people to experience shared emotions such as joy, sorrow and sympathy. Therefore, I strongly believe that music can effectively reduce cultural and generational differences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have fully addressed all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position from the introduction through to the conclusion. Your arguments regarding the transcendence of language barriers and the shared emotional experience of music are well-developed and supported by relevant examples, such as the mention of Hindi songs and family gatherings. The ideas are extended logically, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the topic throughout. To reach a higher band, you could further explore the nuance of how music might fail to bridge gaps, perhaps by briefly acknowledging counter-arguments to demonstrate a more sophisticated, balanced perspective, though this is not strictly required for a strong score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'As a result' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main arguments. The flow between sentences is natural, and referencing is clear throughout. The structure is coherent, and the progression of the argument is easy to follow from the introduction to the final summary. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, which indicates a high level of control over the structure of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'overcome language barriers', 'shared sense of enjoyment', and 'powerful medium' are used accurately and appropriately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it leans towards standard, expected collocations. To move into the higher bands, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to add nuance to your arguments. For instance, instead of 'eliminate differences', you might use 'bridge cultural divides' or 'foster cross-generational cohesion'. Overall, your word choice is accurate and does not impede communication, showing a good command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your writing displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like clauses ('even if they are unable to understand') and concessive clauses ('Although children... may have different lifestyles'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is consistent. There are no significant grammatical errors that hinder the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher band, you could experiment with a wider range of complex sentence forms, such as inversion or more varied subordinate clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility. However, the current level of accuracy and the mix of structures are well-suited for a high-level response.
