Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed that music is a positive way of bringing different people of all ages and cultures together. While I agree with this statement because even if the language is not understandable, people unite through the tunes of the music. However it could distant people as well if ones sentiment is hurt with the very music which is supposed to bring unity.

Music is a universal art performed all over the world. First of all, music has no age, a song which is enjoyed by teenagers can be cherished by elder people as well. If a song resonates with someone they do not look into the ethnicity or religion of the artist, they simply admire without judgement. This shows that music can help a person look past their political or religious views and appreciate the mere talent.

Secondly, music crosses language boundaries as well. As I have mentioned earlier, if a human can tune in with the music they tend to ignore the language barrier. Allowing people to have joyous moments without any hesitation in sight. Some music lets different cultures to bend and represent a broader image of their country or continent.

But on the other hand if that same music intends to mocks someone's belief. This could result in dissatisfactory consequences. Like fights between countries or just merely holding a grudge.

To conclude, music is a fine way to convey messages or to gain large audiences. But carefulness is necessary when it comes to international matters where a lot of people are involved with their sentiments. Nevertheless, there is no argument that music is probably one of the few arts which connects people together from all over the globe regardless of their culture or age.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that acknowledges the unifying power of music while noting its potential to cause division. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. However, the development of the counter-argument regarding music causing division is somewhat brief compared to the main argument. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'negative' aspect with a concrete example, such as how nationalistic anthems or controversial lyrics can incite tension. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'First of all,' 'Secondly,' and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the sentence 'But on the other hand if that same music intends to mocks someone's belief' is a sentence fragment and lacks a clear link to the previous paragraph. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'resonates,' 'ethnicity,' and 'boundaries.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'distant' (used as a verb, should be 'alienate') and 'dissatisfactory' (should be 'negative' or 'detrimental'). Additionally, the phrase 'tune in with the music' is slightly informal. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is occasionally lacking. To improve, focus on using collocations more accurately and expanding your range of academic vocabulary to express nuanced ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('music intends to mocks') and punctuation errors (starting sentences with 'But' or 'However' followed by a fragment). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'music has no age.' Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure that your punctuation and verb forms are consistently accurate.
